  • Jose Abreu: Playing winter ball
    By RotoWire

Abreu has signed with the Senadores of San Juan of the Puerto Rican winter league, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports. Abreu never caught on with another team after being released by the Astros in June but remains hopeful of getting a shot with a club next season. The first baseman will turn 38 in January and is still owed $19.5 million by Houston, so another team would have to pay him only the minimum salary. Abreu slashed just .217/.275/.351 during his two seasons with the Astros.

  • Jose Abreu: Unlikely to return in 2024
    By RotoWire

Abreu is not expected to sign with another team this season after being released by the Astros last month, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports. The veteran first baseman was cut loose by Houston after managing just a .361 OPS in 35 contests. Abreu will be 38 heading into next season and is still owed $19.5 million by the Astros, but he will consider playing for another team in 2025 if the situation is right, per Romero.

  • Jose Abreu: Cut loose by Astros
    By RotoWire

The Astros released Abreu on Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Abreu was in the second year of a three-year, $58.5 million contract with Houston but will hit the open market after a dreadful start to the 2024 season. In 120 big-league plate appearances, Abreu posted a .362 OPS with a career-worst 23.3 percent K rate and a 3.4 percent walk rate. Amid his struggles, Abreu spent nearly a month in the minors, beginning at the Astros' FCL affiliate before being brought up to Triple-A Sugar Land, where he went hitless in seven at-bats. Although the 37-year-old didn't show much to indicate improvements are coming, he's still just three years removed from a 30-homer season and is a former AL MVP, making him an intriguing reclamation project as a free agent.

    By RotoWire

Abreu isn't in the Astros' lineup versus the Giants on Tuesday. Prior to being absent from the lineup Tuesday, Abreu had made six straight starts and had made appearances in nine consecutive games, going 5-for-29 over the latter span. With the 37-year-old getting a breather, Jon Singleton will start at first and bat fifth.

  • Astros' Jose Abreu: Smacks second homer
    By RotoWire

Abreu went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 7-1 win over the Angels. Abreu has gone a modest 3-for-17 over six games in June, but two of those hits have been homers. The first baseman has made limited progress at the plate since he was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land, but he's seeing steady playing time anyway. He's slashing .122/.171/.194 with two homers, six RBI and eight runs scored over 105 plate appearances in 2024.
