The Rockies re-signed Stallings on Wednesday to a one-year, $2 million contract with a $2 million mutual option for 2026. Stallings declined his portion of a mutual option for 2025 earlier this month but is now back in Colorado on a new deal. The veteran catcher slashed .263/.357/.453 with nine homers over 82 games for the Rockies in 2024. Stallings will likely share catching duties with Drew Romo in 2025, although Hunter Goodman could also be in the mix.

Stallings declined his mutual option Monday and entered free agency, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Stallings will test out the open market after slashing .263/.357/.453 with nine homers, 36 RBI and 31 runs scored over 82 regular-season games with Colorado in 2024. He'll be a strong candidate to become a back-up catcher elsewhere.

Stallings is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cardinals. After going 2-for-6 with a double and walk while starting both of the first two games of the series, Stallings will cede catching duties to Hunter Goodman in the finale. The two backstops seem to be part of a timeshare at the position, with rookie Drew Romo representing a lightly used No. 3 option.

Stallings went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Sunday's 6-2 loss to the Cubs. Stallings has gone 14-for-55 (.255) over 17 contests since the start of August as Colorado's backup catcher. He has four homers in that span and a career-high nine on the year, offering a bit of pop despite limited playing time. Overall, he's maintained a .261/.358/.455 slash line with 35 RBI, 27 runs scored, 14 doubles and one triple over 258 plate appearances.

Stallings is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's contest versus the Nationals. Drew Romo will start at catcher while Stallings hits the bench Tuesday. Stallings and Romo have now received two starts apiece since the latter joined the major-league roster following Elias Diaz's release, and the two seem likely to continue splitting catching duties down the stretch.
