  • Jake Cave: Becomes free agent
    By RotoWire

Cave elected free agency Friday. Cave has exercised his right to free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment to the minors by the Rockies. The veteran outfielder slashed .251/.290/.396 with seven home runs over 123 games for Colorado this season.

  • Cave is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals. After closing out the weekend series with the Dodgers with three consecutive starts, Cave looked to have moved into a strong-side platoon role in right field. However, the Rockies have since sent him to the bench for two straight games against right-handed pitchers, with Jordan Beck and Sam Hilliard having both picked up starts at the position. Rather than leaning on one player, Colorado may prefer to take a three-headed approach in right field over what's left of the season.

  • Rockies' Jake Cave: On bench Tuesday
    By RotoWire

Cave is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cardinals. Cave went 1-for-11 with a walk in the three-game series against the Dodgers from Friday through Sunday. As he takes a seat on the bench, Jordan Beck is starting in right field and batting ninth Tuesday.

  • Cave will start in right field and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Dodgers. Cave has now started in five of the Rockies' last six matchups with right-handed starting pitchers and may have recaptured the strong side of a platoon in right field with the right-handed-hitting Jordan Beck. Since the beginning of August, Cave is getting on base at a modest .268 clip but has at least provided some pop (11 extra-base hits).

  • Cave will start in left field and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Brewers. Though he'll be included in the lineup Sunday over a resting Nolan Jones, the lefty-hitting Cave was on the bench for three of the Rockies' previous four matchups with right-handers. The Rockies look to be prioritizing Jones and Jordan Beck as starters in the corner outfield ahead of Cave, a 31-year-old journeyman who is entering his final year of arbitration this winter and may be a non-tender candidate.
