Swanson underwent surgery to address a core injury in early October, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Going under the knife immediately after the end of the regular season should allow Swanson to return in 2025 without missing any time. The 30-year-old infielder slashed .242/.312/.390 with 16 homers, 66 RBI and 19 steals during his second season in Chicago and is expected to remain the Cubs' everyday shortstop next season.

Unless he comes in to pinch hit, Swanson will finish the 2024 regular season with a slash line of .242/.312/.390, 19 stolen bases, 16 home runs and 66 RBI across 593 plate appearances.

Swanson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Phillies. Swanson looks to be receiving some routine maintenance after he had been in the lineup for every game dating back to June 14, a stretch of 87 consecutive starts. Unless he's used off the bench, Swanson will put a five-game hitting streak on hold before likely returning to the starting nine Tuesday. Luis Vazquez will fill in for Swanson at shortstop on Monday.
