The Nationals released Gsellman on Wednesday, Byron Kerr of MLB.com reports. Gsellman has spent all season at Triple-A Rochester after failing to make the Nationals' roster out of spring training. He's accumulated an 8.75 ERA and 1.78 WHIP through 36 innings in the minors and will now look to secure another deal elsewhere. The 30-year-old righty hasn't pitched in the majors since 2022, and a return to MLB is unlikely to come until he shows significant improvement.

The pitcher left affiliated ball in 2022 to pursue a career in Japan. Overseas, he had a 4.32 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across 139.2 innings. When he signed with the Nationals, it was thought the 30-year-old would likely start at Triple-A Rochester.

Gsellman signed a one-year contract Sunday with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball. After spending the last 12 years in affiliated ball, the 29-year-old Gsellman will head overseas to continue his career. Gsellman was most recently a member of the Cubs organization, making eight relief appearances for the big club and 10 appearances (nine starts) for Triple-A Iowa before he was released in July. Gsellman owns a 4.60 ERA and 10.1 K-BB% across 366 innings over parts of seven seasons in the big leagues.

Gsellman was designated for assignment Monday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Gsellman made eight appearances during his time on the roster, struggling to a 4.70 ERA while striking out just 14.1 percent of opposing batters. He's been a passable reliever for most of his career, so it's possible he gets claimed off waivers, but he's unlikely to find high-leverage work anywhere.
