• Orioles' Ryan Mountcastle: Nearing rehab assignment

  Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Tuesday that Mountcastle (wrist) is expected to begin a rehab assignment by the end of the week and could return from the 10-day injured list before the end of the regular season, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports. The 27-year-old has been sidelined since Aug. 22 due to a sprained left wrist, but he's on the cusp of returning to game action. The Orioles begin their final road trip of the regular season next Tuesday against the Yankees, and Mountcastle should rejoin the big club at some point during that six-game stretch after getting some at-bats in the minors.

He was placed on the 10-day injured list four days later, but it wasn't until Friday that he started swinging a bat by hitting off a tee. The Orioles are in a tight race in the AL East with the Yankees, but they have a comfortable lead in the AL Wild Card, so there could be caution in bringing Mountcastle back into the fold to avoid aggravating his wrist injury. From the end of the All-Star break to his placement on the IL, Mountcastle had a slash line of .259/.296/.370 with one home run and 18 RBI across 115 plate appearances.
