  • Luis Urias: Becomes free agent
    By RotoWire

Urias elected free agency Friday. He cleared waivers after being removed from the Mariners' 40-man roster and has decided not to accept an outright assignment to the minors. Urias, 27, managed just a .191/.303/.394 slash line in 41 games with Seattle this season.

  • Urias drew his first start since Sept. 4 in Sunday's win over the Rangers and went 0-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and a run. Urias was making his first appearance of any kind since that game, one in which he'd rapped out three extra-base hits and knocked in four runs. Despite that stellar performance, Urias had not been able to crack the starting nine again with Josh Rojas healthy and getting regular run at the hot corner. Urias limped to a .152 average and .580 OPS across his first 35 games at the big-league level this season before being demoted to Triple-A Tacoma, but he'd earned a call back up by posting a strong .260 average and .789 OPS across 78 games with the Rainiers.

  • Urias went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, four RBI and two runs scored while also drawing a walk in Wednesday's win over the Athletics. Urias brought home Mitch Garver with an RBI double in the top of the fourth before coming around to score himself on a Dylan Moore single as the Mariners took a 5-1 lead. The infielder then added a leadoff homer in the seventh to extend the lead, followed by another RBI double in the eighth, giving him his first three-hit performance of the campaign, as well as his first hits since being promoted to the majors last week. Urias' four RBI on the night also marked a season high.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Promoted from Tacoma
    By RotoWire

The Mariners selected Urias' contract from Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Urias has been swinging a hot bat at Tacoma recently, slashing .333/.434/.578 with three homers, 10 RBI and 12 runs scored over 53 plate appearances across his last 12 games. His uptick in production has now been rewarded with a spot on the active roster, though he will have to compete for playing time at third base with Josh Rojas. In corresponding moves, Gabe Speier was optioned to Triple-A, and Terrin Vavra was designated for assignment.

  • Urias, who was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on May 24, sports a .382 average and 1.093 OPS across 40 plate appearances over his last nine games. Urias has been a mainstay for the Triple-A club since his demotion, but his current stretch, which includes two doubles, two home runs, eight RBI, five walks, a stolen base and 11 runs, has easily been his best yet while down on the farm. The hot hitting also bears zero resemblance to Urias' performance with the big-league club earlier this season, for which he limped to a .152/.264/.316 slash line across 34 games. Urias exclusively played third base while with the Mariners but has plenty of big-league experience at second base and shortstop. If new Mariners manager Dan Wilson wants to see what the veteran might be able to offer down the stretch, Urias will have to regain a spot on the 40-man roster after being removed from it back on June 4.
