The Cubs are starting a third straight lefty in the series in Justin Steele, and the left-handed-hitting Brown has been out of the lineup for all three contests, although he did receive a couple plate appearances off the bench Tuesday. Tyler Nevin is in left field for Wednesday's series finale.

  • Brown went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run and an additional RBI in Friday's 7-6 extra-innings win over the Tigers. Brown didn't start Friday, but he was one of four Athletics with multiple hits in the marathon game. The 32-year-old saved the day in the 11th inning with a game-tying homer, then came up big again with the walk-off hit, a single, to plate JJ Bleday in the 13th. Brown has seven multi-hit efforts over his last 10 games, going 16-for-35 (.457) with four homers and 14 RBI in that span. The surge has him up to a .251/.310/.421 slash line with 14 homers, 44 RBI, 29 runs scored and four stolen bases through 106 contests overall.

  • Brown is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Tigers. He's been swinging a hot bat over the past couple weeks, slashing .391/.442/.630 with three homers and 12 RBI in his last 13 games, but Brown remains a strict platoon player for manager Mark Kotsay. In fact, Brown has made just a single start against a lefty this season. Tarik Skubal starts for Detroit in the series opener.
