  • The Tigers signed Nido to a minor-league contract Tuesday. Nido was released by the Cubs in late August just as he was beginning a rehab assignment following a debridement procedure on his right knee. He should be healthy enough to play now and will give the Tigers some organizational catching depth for the stretch run.

The Cubs released Nido (knee) on Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Nido was released to make room for Shawn Armstrong on the 40-man roster. After signing with Chicago in June, Nido slashed .128/.143/.234 with one home run in 50 plate appearances. The 30-year-old catcher could draw some interest on the open market, though he's currently recovering from a debridement procedure on his right knee.

Nido (knee) went 1-for-2 with a run scored in his first rehab game with Triple-A Iowa on Thursday. Nido is exactly one month removed from a debridement procedure on his right knee but is ready for game action again. He shouldn't need more than a handful of rehab games before returning. Christian Bethancourt has played well as the Cubs' backup to Miguel Amaya, but there could be room for all three catchers when rosters expand.

He's expected back sometime in September and should share the Cubs' catching duties with Miguel Amaya when he returns.

Nido underwent a debridgement on his right knee Tuesday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Nido landed on the 10-day injured list last week with a sprained knee and has now had it scoped. He's expected to be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks, per Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network, so he'll likely be out until September.
