Moronta passed away in a traffic accident Sunday, Hector Gomez of Z101Digital.com reports. In a tragic turn of events, Moronta lost his life Sunday at 31 years old. The right-hander pitched in parts of six major-league seasons with the Giants, Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Angels from 2017 through 2023, turning in a 3.05 ERA with 202 strikeouts over 177 career appearances out of the bullpen. He had most recently been pitching in the Mexican League with Bravos de Leon before being released last week.

Moronta elected free agency Wednesday. Moronta, 30, made two appearances for the Angels this season but spent most of the year at Triple-A Salt Lake. He'll look to land a new deal this offseason and will probably have to settle for a minor-league pact.

The Angels outrighted Moronta to Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday. The right-handed reliever will remain in the Angels organization after going unclaimed off waivers when he was designated for assignment Friday. Prior to being removed from the 40-man roster, Moronta made two relief appearances for the big club, recording four outs while giving up one run on four hits and three walks.

Moronta was designated for assignment by the Angels on Friday. This is the corresponding move for the promotion of Sam Bachman, who has been selected to the major-league roster. Moronta allowed one run on four hits and three walks in 1.1 innings (two appearances) during his short stay in the Angels' bullpen.

Los Angeles selected Moronta's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday. Moronta didn't allow a run in his three appearances with Salt Lake while striking out nine over his four frames. The right-hander will likely work in the middle innings while he's a member of the Angels bullpen.
