• Pirates' Bryan Reynolds: Focusing on right field

  Reynolds said Tuesday that he's focusing on being a right fielder rather than potentially seeing some time at first base, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Reynolds began working out at first base in September as the Pirates kicked around the idea of using him there at least on a part-time basis. However, even after the injury to Spencer Horwitz (wrist/thumb), it does not sound like Reynolds is being considered as an option to play first base. Fantasy leaguers should not be counting on the 30-year-old gaining dual eligibility.

• Pirates' Bryan Reynolds: Staying in outfield for now

  Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said Tuesday that Reynolds will remain focused on playing the outfield even after the injury to first baseman Spencer Horwitz (wrist), Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Horwitz underwent right wrist/thumb surgery last week and is expected to be sidelined for 6-to-8 weeks. Earlier this offseason, the Pirates discussed using Reynolds some at first base, prior to their acquisition of Horwitz. While Reynolds could still eventually see some time at the position, it does not appear he will be one of the prime candidates to fill in there while Horwitz is on the mend. Jared Triolo, Billy Cook and Darick Hall loom as the in-house options to man first base while Horwitz is out.

  The Pirates plan to play Reynolds at first base, at least on a part-time basis, in 2025, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Reynolds has never played first base in pro ball, but he began working out there in September of this past season. The soon-to-be 30-year-old graded out as one of the worst outfield defenders in baseball in 2024, ranking in the first percentile in Outs Above Average. How much action Reynolds ultimately sees at first base could depend not only on how well he takes to the position but also how the Pirates address the position this offseason.

  Reynolds went 2-for-3 with two home runs, three RBI and a walk in Friday's win over the Yankees. Reynolds tied the game at 2-2 with his solo shot in the sixth inning. He then drilled a go-ahead two-run shot in the eighth. Reynolds snapped a 21-game homerless drought, during which he posted a disappointing .580 OPS. He's up to 24 home runs, matching his total from both 2023 and 2021. Reynolds is slashing .276/.344/.450 through 683 plate appearances.

  Reynolds is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds. This looks like a breather for Reynolds, who is in the midst of a 3-for-23 cold spell. After totaling 18 home runs in the first half, Reynolds has hit just four homers since the All-Star break, and none since Sept. 2. Billy Cook will get the start in left field, batting ninth against right-hander Hunter Greene.
