Ferguson (4-2) got the win against the Cubs on Wednesday, firing a scoreless seventh inning during which he issued a walk. Ferguson threw only three of his 10 pitches for strikes, but he was able to get through the seventh frame unscathed and then saw the Athletics snap a 3-3 tie in the eighth to make him the pitcher of record. Ferguson has now strung together four consecutive scoreless appearances after a rocky early-September stretch during which he surrendered five runs (four earned) across 3.1 innings over four appearances.

Ferguson (3-2) got the win against the Mariners on Monday, striking out the side in a perfect ninth inning. Ferguson retired Victor Robles, J.P. Crawford and Julio Rodriguez on swinging strikeouts and needed just 12 pitches to do so. Ferguson then was rewarded for his pristine work when the Athletics walked it off in the bottom of the ninth with Shea Langeliers' solo home run, which afforded Ferguson his second win in the last three appearances. Ferguson clearly has the stuff to work in high-leverage, late-inning spots whenever closer Mason Miller is unavailable, which was the case Monday after Miller threw 34 pitches in a rough 1.2-inning outing Sunday.

Ferguson picked up the save over the Angels on Saturday, pitching a perfect ninth inning while striking out one. Ferguson was again tasked with closer duties Saturday due to Mason Miller being out with an hand fracture and did not disappoint, needing only seven pitches to retire the side and secure his second save of the season. The right-handed Ferguson hasn't allowed a run in his last seven appearances and has pitched perfect ninth innings in each of his last two outings. Ferguson has also posted at least one strikeout in eight consecutive appearances.

The Athletics recalled Ferguson from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday. Ferguson was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on the final day of May after posting a 4.50 ERA over 10 innings for Oakland. In Las Vegas, the 30-year-old tallied a 3.49 ERA across 28.1 innings. As part of a corresponding move Tuesday, Sean Newcomb was designated for assignment.

Ferguson (0-1) was charged with the loss against the Rays in extra innings Thursday, allowing an unearned run across 1.1 hitless innings. He struck out one. Ferguson entered the game in the 11th with the score knotted at 5-5 and retired the side in order before returning for the 12th and inducing an inning-opening groundout that moved phantom runner Jose Caballero to third base. T.J. McFarland subsequently allowed Caballero to cross the plate on Richie Palacios' walk-off single, saddling Ferguson with the loss. The right-hander did at least bounce back from a rocky outing Wednesday, one that had seen him allow a run on three hits over two-thirds of an inning. Ferguson is likely to continue seeing work primarily in lower-leverage scenarios, and he holds a 4.50 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over his nine appearances this season.
