The Mets signed Cabrera to a minor-league contract Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. Cabrera, 28, compiled a 3.59 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 50:29 K:BB over 62.2 innings with the Blue Jays in 2024. The left-handed reliever flashes plus stuff, but he's struggled with walks and inconsistency.

Cabrera cleared waivers and opted for free agency Monday. Cabrera served as one of Toronto's more reliable bullpen arms during the 2024 season, cruising to a 3.00 ERA and 1.40 WHIP with a 48:29 K:BB in his first 66 appearances (60.0 innings) before surrendering five runs in his final three outings of the year to inflate his ERA to 3.59. He shouldn't have much trouble latching on elsewhere heading into his age-28 season.

The Blue Jays activated Cabrera (personal) from the paternity list Sunday. Right-hander Yerry Rodriguez was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo to make room on the 26-man active roster and in the bullpen for Cabrera. Before he was away from the team over the past three days welcoming a new addition into his family, Cabrera had compiled a 3.50 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 37:23 K:BB across 46.1 innings over 50 appearances for Toronto.

The Blue Jays placed Cabrera on the paternity list Thursday. Cabrera will be allowed to miss up to three games as he spends time with his expanding family. Tommy Nance was selected from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move to replenish Toronto's bullpen depth.

Cabrera gave up a hit and a walk while striking out one in the 10th inning Sunday to record his second save of the season in a win over the Mariners. Chad Green worked the ninth in a tie game, leaving Cabrera to handle the save situation when the team took the lead in the top of the 10th. The southpaw got the job done, continuing a hot streak that has seen him get scored upon only once in his last 12 appearances. Cabrera sports a 0.75 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 8:2 K:BB in 12 innings over that stretch, but he hasn't seen consistent high-leverage usage -- he has two extra-inning saves during that time, but zero wins or holds. With Tim Mayza no longer on the roster, however, Cabrera is the top left-handed option in the Toronto bullpen, which should lead to more holds in the second half of the season.
