  • Athletics' Joe Boyle: Recalled to majors
    By RotoWire

The Athletics recalled Boyle from Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday. Boyle will come up to provide the bullpen with a fresh arm, replacing Brandon Bielak, who was designated for assignment. Over 11 outings (10 starts) for Oakland this season, Boyle has posted a 7.12 ERA and 1.74 WHIP across 43 innings.

  • Athletics' Joe Boyle: Sent to Triple-A
    By RotoWire

The Athletics optioned Boyle to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday. Boyle has struggled since rejoining the big-league squad in mid-August, allowing 12 earned runs across 15.1 innings. He moved to the bullpen for his most recent outing, though it's unclear if he'll shift back into a starting role upon returning to Las Vegas. His roster spot will be given to Scott Alexander (shoulder), who returned from the injured list Wednesday.

  • Boyle retired one batter and was charged with three earned runs on no hits and three walks during his relief appearance in Thursday's 10-9 loss to the Reds. He also hit a batter with a pitch. Boyle's latest stint in the Oakland rotation lasted all of two turns, with the Athletics opting to move him to the bullpen after he struck out eight but gave up five earned runs on five hits and four walks in five innings his last time out Saturday versus Milwaukee. J.T. Ginn shifted from the bullpen to make his first MLB start Thursday, and he gave up four runs over five innings prior to being lifted from the contest. Boyle then entered in the bottom of the sixth and was credited with a hold after departing with a 6-5 lead, even though he loaded the bases prior to exiting the game. Over the long haul, the Athletics are hoping that Boyle's poor control and lack of reliable secondary offerings will be lesser concerns in a relief role, but his first exposure to the bullpen wasn't promising.

  • Boyle (3-6) took the loss Saturday, coughing up five runs on five hits and four walks over five innings as the A's fell 9-5 to the Brewers. He struck out eight. It was a typical outing for Boyle, as he generated 30 called or swinging strikes among his 104 pitches but issued at least three free passes for the seventh straight start in the majors, a streak that stretches back into April. The 25-year-old righty has a 5.40 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 20:10 K:BB through 15 innings over three outings since getting called back up, but Oakland will let him work through his control issues in the hopes that he can emerge as a reliable rotation option. Boyle is scheduled to make his next start on the road next weekend against the Rangers.

  • Athletics' Joe Boyle: Getting another start
    By RotoWire

Boyle is scheduled to start Monday's game against the Rays at Oakland Coliseum. After getting recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas last Tuesday, Boyle immediately stepped into the rotation as a replacement for Ross Stripling, who was sent to the bullpen. In his first start for Oakland since May 5, Boyle took a no-decision in a 9-4 win over the Mets, striking out six over four innings while allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks. Through eight outings overall in the big leagues this season, Boyle owns a 2-5 record and 7.39 ERA across 31.2 innings.
