• Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Opening season in minors

  The Red Sox plan to assign Mayer to Triple-A Worcester prior to Thursday's season opener versus the Rangers, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports. Though manager Alex Cora didn't dismiss the possibility of Mayer breaking camp with the big club even in the latter stages of spring training, the 22-year-old infielder always appeared likely to begin the season at Triple-A. Mayer will be joined at Worcester by another elite prospect in outfielder Roman Anthony, while second baseman Kristian Campbell will be the first of the Red Sox's "Big Three" prospects to reach the big leagues. Though Mayer impressed with a .983 OPS in Grapefruit League play, the Red Sox will likely want the shortstop to find some success at the Triple-A level early on in the season before giving him the call to the majors. Mayer could also get some more exposure to second base and third base at Worcester in an effort to increase his versatility and potentially expedite his arrival to the majors.

  Mayer started at second base and went 1-for-3 with a walk, a triple and a run scored in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers. Mayer, Boston's shortstop of the future, made his first Grapefruit League start at second base. Until Wednesday, he'd started at shortstop and third base this spring. This move is notable, because Red Sox manager Alex Cora hasn't named a starter at second base yet. One candidate, Vaughn Grissom, was removed from the calculus after he was assigned to minor-league camp Wednesday. It may be unlikely that Mayer, who has yet to take an at-bat at the Triple-A level, wins the job, but the manager insisted to Ian Browne of MLB.com that "everybody has a shot."

• Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Healthy for spring training

  Mayer (back) took batting practice Wednesday and appears to be a full participant for the start of spring training, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. Mayer finished the 2024 season on Triple-A Worcester's 7-day injured list while he dealt with a lumbar strain, but he was cleared to resume baseball activities early in the offseason and doesn't look to be operating under any restrictions during his first big-league camp. The 22-year-old isn't a serious candidate to make the Opening Day roster, but a midseason debut is possible if he displays improved durability with Worcester while maintaining the improved plate skills he demonstrated with Double-A Portland. Before getting promoted to Worcester and being placed on the IL soon after, Mayer slashed .307/.370/.480 with eight home runs, 13 stolen bases and a 19.7 percent strikeout rate over 335 plate appearances at Double-A.

  Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that the Red Sox plan to give Mayer (back) more time at second and third base, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. Mayer has been used almost exclusively at shortstop while rising through the ranks of Boston's farm system, playing just two games at third base in three seasons. He's expected to begin the new season at Triple-A Worcester, and adding some defensive versatility figures to give him a better shot at making his big-league debut midway through the year.

  Triple-A Worcester will place Mayer (hip) on the 7-day injured list Tuesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Mayer first suffered a hip/glute injury in late July while playing at Double-A Portland, and despite getting promoted to Worcester more than a week ago, he has yet to be cleared for his Triple-A debut. Before getting the call to Worcester, Mayer slashed .307/.370/.480 with eight home runs and 13 steals in 77 games at Portland.
