• Orioles' Colton Cowser: Out for six-plus weeks

  Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that he expects Cowser to be out "probably 6-to-8 weeks minimum" after the outfielder was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday due to a fractured left thumb, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports. Cowser suffered structural damage to his thumb while he slid into first base during Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Blue Jays. The Orioles recalled Dylan Carlson from Triple-A Norfolk to provide extra coverage in the outfield while Cowser is out, but Heston Kjerstad appears to be the most likely candidate to earn regular playing time -- at least against right-handed pitching -- over the next several weeks. Hyde didn't say whether or not Cowser would require surgery on his thumb.

  The Orioles placed Cowser on the 10-day injured list Monday with a fractured left thumb, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. Cowser injured the thumb on a slide into first base in Sunday's loss to the Blue Jays, and testing revealed the fracture. It's not yet clear how much time Cowser will miss, but it will certainly be longer than a minimum stay on the IL. Dylan Carlson has taken Cowser's spot on the roster and will get some playing time in Cowser's place, but Heston Kjerstad could be the primary beneficiary.

  Cowser had successful surgery on his fractured hand Tuesday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. Cowser fractured his left hand in Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series versus the Royals on Oct. 2, the game in which the Orioles were eliminated. Given the timing of the injury, Cowser is expected to have enough recovery time to be ready for the start of spring training.

  Cowser went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Friday's 7-2 win over the Twins. Cowser has tapped into his power late in the season, swatting four homers over his last seven games. He's also logged seven RBI and 12 strikeouts in that span. The rookie outfielder is up to 24 homers, 69 RBI, 77 runs scored, nine stolen bases and a .244/.323/.451 slash line over 152 contests. He's been able to maintain respectable numbers despite striking out at a 30.9 percent rate this season.

• Orioles' Colton Cowser: Lifts 23rd homer

  Cowser went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Yankees. Cowser has hit safely in seven of his last eight games, going 9-for-28 (.321) with three homers in that span. Those long balls account for his only RBI since Sept. 3, but he's at least done his part by getting on base regularly. The outfielder has maintained a .244/.324/.447 slash line with 23 homers, 65 RBI, 75 runs scored and eight stolen bases over 149 contests as a regular in the lineup for much of the campaign.
