Buttrey held his own while at big-league camp, surrendering one run on five hits while striking out five over five frames. He'll now set his sights on preparing for the 2024 minor-league campaign and figures to begin the year at Triple-A Tacoma.

Buttrey will attempt to carve out a role for himself in the Mariners organization after surrendering eight runs in 13.1 frames with the Astros' Triple-A affiliate last season. The 30-year-old righty hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2020 during a stint with the Angels.

  The Astros released Buttrey on Tuesday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. After putting up a 5.40 ERA and 1.83 WHIP through 13.1 innings with Triple-A Sugar Land, Buttrey will now look to latch on with another organization. The 30-year-old righty hasn't pitched in the majors since 2020.

  Buttrey (finger) has made one appearance out of the bullpen since being reinstated from Triple-A Sugar Land's 7-day injured list Friday, covering two scoreless innings while allowing no hits and two walks and striking out one batter. Buttrey's appearance Saturday was his first for the Triple-A club since late April after he missed more than two months while recovering from a fractured right middle finger. Sugar Land welcomed Buttrey back into its bullpen after he made three rehab appearances in the rookie-level Florida Complex League.

• Astros' Ty Buttrey: Recovering from fractured finger

  Buttrey announced Wednesday via his personal Twitter account that he has reported to the Astros' spring training facility in West Palm Beach, Fla. to begin rehab for a small hairline fracture in his right middle finger. Buttrey disclosed that he sustained the injury while fielding a comebacker, presumably during his most recent appearance for Triple-A Sugar Land on April 25. Expect Sugar Land to place Buttrey on its 7-day injured list in the coming days. The 30-year-old right-hander had made a strong early case for a promotion to the big club after logging a 1.93 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over 4.2 innings at Sugar Land.
