Castillo was designated for assignment Sunday. He loses his spot on the 40-man roster on the final day of the season and will be a free agent this offseason. Castillo walked more batters (eight) than he struck out (six) in the big leagues this season and last recorded a save in 2022 with Seattle.

The Twins recalled Castillo from Triple-A St. Paul on Saturday. Castillo has appeared in six games for the Twins this season, surrendering two earned runs across eight innings while striking out four batters and walking seven. He'll now come up from the minor leagues to give Minnesota's bullpen a fresh arm, taking the place of Kody Funderburk, who was optioned to Triple-A.

The Twins optioned Castillo to Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday. Just three days after he was added to the Twins' 40-man roster and 28-man active roster, Castillo will head back to the minors to open up a spot for right-hander Louie Varland, who was recalled ahead of an expected bulk-relief appearance Wednesday versus the Rays. During his brief time with the Twins, Castillo made one appearance and struck out a batter in a scoreless inning.

The Twins selected Castillo's contract from Triple-A St. Paul on Sunday. Castillo had previously given up just two earned runs over seven innings over five appearances out of the Minnesota bullpen earlier this season, but the shiny 2.57 ERA came with an ugly 1.71 WHIP and 3:7 K:BB. He was bumped off the Twins' 40-man roster in June before he elected free agency, only to re-sign with the organization on a minor-league deal in early July. Castillo has continued to show spotty control at St. Paul this season (21 walks in 32.1 innings), so the Twins are unlikely to turn to him for high-leverage work during his latest stint in the big leagues.

Castillo signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on Wednesday. Castillo elected to become a free agent after he was pushed off the Twins' 40-man roster in June, and he will now return to the organization after exploring his options in the open market. The 30-year-old right-hander will report to Triple-A St. Paul, where he's put up a 2.50 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 18 innings this season.
