Davis agreed to a minor-league contract with the Padres on Monday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Davis elected free agency Saturday after being cast off San Diego's 40-man roster and clearing waivers, but he'll return to the organization on a minor-league deal. The 31-year-old is likely to report to Triple-A El Paso, with whom he's logged a 3.10 ERA across 29 innings this season.

Davis elected free agency Saturday after the Padres outrighted him to Triple-A El Paso. Davis has fewer than three years of MLB service time, but because he had previously been outrighted off a 40-man roster earlier in his career, he had the ability to reject an assignment to the minors in lieu of free agency. The 31-year-old southpaw shouldn't have much trouble landing elsewhere on a minor-league deal after turning in a 3.10 ERA over 29 innings for El Paso in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League before struggling in his seven innings with the Padres (9.00 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 6:5 K:BB).

The Padres designated Davis for assignment Wednesday. The Padres needed to clear space for new acquisitions Martin Perez, Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing, so Davis will be jettisoned off both the active roster and the 40-man. The 31-year-old southpaw appeared in seven games for San Diego, allowing seven runs in seven innings while striking out six batters and walking five.

The Padres selected Davis' contract from Triple-A El Paso on Friday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Davis had been serving as the closer at El Paso, where he posted a 3.10 ERA and 37:16 K:BB over 29 innings. The left-hander has made 136 appearances over parts of five seasons in the majors, but this will be his first stint in the big leagues since 2022. It's not yet clear what the Padres' corresponding roster move will be.

Davis signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Wednesday. The lefty reliever had a 2023 season to forget, posting an 11.22 ERA and 34:38 K:BB over 25.2 innings at Triple-A Sugar Land in the Astros organization. Slated to turn 31 on Saturday, Davis holds a career 5.61 ERA and 159:73 K:BB across 144.1 frames in parts of five seasons at the major-league level.
