Deichmann signed a minor-league contract with the Athletics on Thursday, Melissa Lockard of The Athletic reports. Deichmann was selected by the A's in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft before getting shipped to the Cubs in 2021 as part of the Andrew Chafin trade. He batted just .214/.271/.335 with seven home runs and eight stolen bases in 78 games last summer at Triple-A Iowa.

The Cubs released Deichmann on Monday. Deichmann appeared in 14 games for the Cubs in the second half of the 2021 campaign, but he's played exclusively at Triple-A Iowa this season after losing his spot on the 40-man roster in late April. The 27-year-old posted a mediocre .606 OPS over 282 plate appearances in the International League, prompting the Cubs to move on from him.

Deichmann cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Deichmann was cast off the 40-man roster Saturday, but he'll remain in the organization. In eight appearances for Iowa this year, he's hit .207 with a double, three RBI, a run and a steal.

Deichmann was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Saturday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. The move clears space on the 40-man roster for the Cubs to add Locke St. John. Deichmann has gotten off to a slow start for Triple-A Iowa this season, hitting .207 with a 44.8 percent strikeout rate through eight games.

Deichmann was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Friday. Deichmann was fighting for a bench spot at best and won't win one to open the year. He grabbed just four hits while striking out 14 times in 31 plate appearances in his brief debut last season but posted a .274/.388/.435 line at the Triple-A level.
