Hancock allowed two hits and struck out seven without walking a batter over four scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Thursday. Hancock got the spot start since Bryan Woo (pectoral) was unavailable. This was Hancock's first start since July 1, as he had served out of the bullpen since rejoining the Mariners at the start of September. He's on a 9.2-inning scoreless streak over his last five appearances. Hancock has a 4.90 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 64:31 K:BB through 90 innings across 22 appearances (16 starts) in the majors this season. If the 26-year-old is on the Mariners' postseason roster, he will likely be a multi-inning option out of the bullpen.

Hancock will start Thursday's game against the Rockies, Andrew Destin of the Associated Press reports. He's filling in for Bryan Woo (pectoral), who is having a start skipped. Hancock hasn't thrown more than two innings in an appearance since being moved to the bullpen in late August, so it will be a relatively abbreviated outing for the righty Thursday.

The Mariners recalled Hancock from Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday. Hancock recently moved to the bullpen at Tacoma and his stuff played up, as he averaged 97 miles per hour with his four-seamer and topped out at 99.1 mph. The righty will likely be used in low-leverage situations initially but could be entrusted with late-inning appearances before long if he gets off to a good start.

Hancock has moved to the bullpen at Triple-A Tacoma and allowed one run on two hits and one walk over one inning of work in his first relief appearance there Wednesday. The bottom-line results weren't there for Hancock, but he averaged 97.4 mph with his four-seamer in the outing. That's a substantial velocity uptick from the 94.7 mph he's averaged this season during his time as a starter with the Mariners. It's not clear whether this is a permanent move to the bullpen for Hancock, but he could turn into a weapon in relief with his stuff playing up in shorter bursts.

The Mariners optioned Hancock to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday. Hancock will be sent back to the minors one day after allowing five runs over six innings in a loss to the Royals to push his ERA on the season to 5.47. The right-hander had been lined up to start Sunday against the Pirates, so the Mariners will need to find a replacement in the rotation for this weekend.
