Sears (9-11) allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over 5.2 innings to earn the win over the Diamondbacks on Sunday. Sears got a spot start in the regular-season finale to give the rest of the Padres' starters some rest ahead of the playoffs. This was one of his better performances since being acquired from the Athletics at the trade deadline -- he posted a 5.47 ERA over 24.2 innings in five outings following the trade. Overall, Sears closed the regular season at a 5.04 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 117:36 K:BB across 135.2 innings.

The Padres recalled Sears from Triple-A El Paso ahead of his scheduled start Sunday versus the Diamondbacks in San Diego. San Diego optioned lefty Kyle Hart to the minors to clear room on the 28-man active roster for Sears. The southpaw isn't expected to be included on the Padres' postseason roster, as he was called up Sunday to afford the other members of the rotation some extra rest in advance of the wild-card series with the Cubs.

The Padres optioned Sears to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday. The Padres turned to Sears to make a spot start Friday against Colorado, during which he surrendered four earned runs on five hits and a walk while fanning eight batters in 4.1 innings. Now that they no longer need a sixth rotation arm, the Friars will send the 26-year-old back to the minors and bring up reliever Bradgley Rodriguez to round out the pitching staff.

The Padres optioned Sears to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday. Three starts into his tenure as a Padre, Sears owns a 5.52 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with an 8:3 K:BB through 14.2 innings. With Michael King (knee) nearing a return from the injured list, Sears will lose his place in the MLB rotation, and the Friars will bring up Alek Jacob from El Paso to provide some extra depth out of the 'pen.

The Padres recalled Sears from Triple-A El Paso ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Giants at Petco Park. Sears was optioned to El Paso after getting tagged for five earned runs in five innings during his team debut Aug. 4 in Arizona following his acquisition at the trade deadline, but he'll get another look as the Padres' No. 5 starter. After Randy Vasquez struggled during a bulk-relief appearance last Friday versus the Dodgers before being sent back to El Paso, Sears will get the next chance to fill the vacancy in the rotation that was created earlier this month when Michael King (knee) landed on the injured list. King is hopeful for a minimum-length stay on the shelf, so Sears may not be guaranteed any starts beyond Wednesday.
