The Red Sox and Wong (hand) avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract Thursday. Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com says the deal is worth $1.375 million, with an additional $75,000 possible in performance bonuses. It was a disastrous 2025 season for the 29-year-old Wong, as he lost his starting job to Carlos Narvaez and finished with a .500 OPS and zero home runs over 63 regular-season contests. Wong -- who is expected to be recovered from October right hand surgery by spring training -- will be Narvaez's backup at catcher again in 2026.

Wong underwent a successful right hand carpal boss excision procedure Thursday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. A carpal boss excision involves the removal of a painful bony growth on the back of the wrist. The Red Sox did not reveal a rehab timetable for Wong, but the surgery is considered minor. Wong slashed only .190/.262/.238 over 63 games for the Red Sox in 2025, losing his starting job to Carlos Narvaez (knee). Narvaez had surgery himself this week, but both catchers should be fine for the start of spring training.

Wong went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Friday's 1-0 win over the Yankees. Wong played the hero in the seventh inning, knocking the second of back-to-back doubles to produce the game's lone run. It's been rough year for Wong, who lost his job as the starting catcher, but the bat has come around recently. He's 9-for-29 (.310) with three doubles and four RBI over the last nine contests.

Wong went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Friday's 5-2 loss to the Dodgers. One month after logging his first RBI of the season, Wong recorded his first extra-base hit. He led off the third with a double off the wall in left and scored Boston's first run. Wong's slashing .151/.231/.161 over 37 games. Per Sean McAdam of MassLive.com, the Red Sox have some interest in adding a catcher at the trade deadline as a Wong replacement. Wong was Boston's catching leader the last two seasons but lost the job to Carlos Narvaez early in 2025 when he landed on the injured list with a finger injury.

Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers. The 28-year-old will hit the bench for the fourth time in five games and looks to have at least temporarily fallen behind Carlos Narvaez on the depth chart at catcher. Wong produced a respectable .758 OPS over 487 plate appearances with Boston in 2024 but has struggled to find a rhythm at the plate since rejoining the big club May 2 following a stint on the injured list due to a broken finger. He's gone just 4-for-18 with one walk against six strikeouts since being activated and is slashing .146/.239/.146 overall on the season.
