Baltimore offered Burnes a $21.05 million qualifying offer Monday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. The Orioles will receive draft pick compensation if Burnes, who will likely decline the qualifying offer, signs with another team. Burnes was traded to Baltimore in February after spending the previous seven years in the Brewers' organization. He finished the 2024 regular season with a 15-9 record over 32 starts with a 2.92 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 181:48 K:BB across 194.1 innings.

Burnes will start Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series for the Orioles, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. After he turned in a 2.92 ERA and 1.10 WHIP over 32 starts, the decision to send Burnes to the mound for Game 1 is a no-brainer. Baltimore still doesn't know who it will be facing to begin its playoff run, but the 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner is a safe bet to put on a strong performance in his first postseason appearance as an Oriole no matter who his opponent is.

Burnes (15-9) allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out nine over five innings, taking the loss versus the Yankees on Thursday. The lone run he gave up was on a Giancarlo Stanton solo home run in the second inning. Burnes was lifted at 69 pitches (46 strikes), likely to keep him fresh for the Orioles' wild-card round matchup, and the Orioles' bullpen was unable to keep this game close. Burnes concludes the regular season on a high note, having allowed just five runs (four earned) while adding a 31:8 K:BB over 30 innings across five starts in September. He posted a 2.92 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 181:48 K:BB over 194.1 innings across 32 regular-season starts.

Burnes (12-6) took the loss against Houston on Thursday, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out two batters over 5.2 innings. Burnes began his outing with three scoreless frames before the Astros tagged him for two runs in the fourth. Following a 1-2-3 fifth inning, the veteran righty folded in the sixth, giving up five hits -- all singles -- to allow four runners to score. In fact, all eight of the knocks Burnes allowed in the contest were singles, so he wasn't exactly hit hard, though the right-hander gave up too much contact with just six whiffs and two punchouts. He still has a respectable 3.28 ERA on the campaign, but over his past four starts he's uncharacteristically posted an 8.71 ERA over 20.2 frames.

Burnes (11-4) earned the win Tuesday over the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out seven. Burnes has been a rock for the Orioles this season -- he's now recorded six straight quality starts and 16 in his last 17 outings. Burnes' ERA now sits at 2.47, the second-best mark in the majors, with a 1.04 WHIP and 128:33 K:BB across 22 starts (138.2 innings). The 29-year-old right-hander is currently lined up for a two-start week -- Burnes is scheduled to face the Guardians on the road this weekend.
