Whisenhunt (back) allowed one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out two across three innings in Triple-A Sacramento's 4-2 loss to Round Rock on Sunday. Whisenhunt was placed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 31 due to a back strain but appears to be nearing a return to the big leagues. He made his first rehab appearance against Round Rock last Tuesday, giving up three runs (two earned) over 1.2 innings while tossing 25 of his 39 pitches for strikes. The left-hander stretched out slightly Sunday, throwing 46 pitches (30 strikes). If the 24-year-old returns to the majors ahead of the regular-season finale Sunday, he'll likely replace Trevor McDonald or Kai-Wei Teng in the rotation.

Whisenhunt (back) is expected to throw a couple innings in a rehab appearance Tuesday with Triple-A Sacramento, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Whisenhunt was placed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 31 due to a back strain but won't require a lengthy stay on the shelf. After completing a bullpen session Sunday that incorporated all of his pitches, Whisenhunt will make an abbreviated rehab appearance Tuesday before potentially rejoining the Giants next weekend. San Francisco has been getting by of late with Kai-Wei Teng and Carson Seymour as its back-end starters, but Whisenhunt could replace either pitcher in the rotation once he's activated.

Whisenhunt isn't expected to miss extended time due to the back strain that landed him on the 15-day injured list Sunday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Whisenhunt is eligible for activation Sept. 12, and he could have a good shot at returning on that date or close to it. The rookie left-hander holds a 5.01 ERA and uninspiring 16:12 K:BB over 23.1 frames covering five starts with the Giants this season.

The Giants placed Whisenhunt on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to a back strain, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The left-hander presumably suffered the injury during his start Wednesday against the Cubs, during which he picked up the win after allowing three runs across five innings. Whisenhunt will be eligible to be reinstated in mid-September, though it's unclear if he's expected to be healthy by that point. Kai-Wei Teng was called up from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move and will take Whisenhunt's place in the rotation Monday at Colorado.

The Giants recalled Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento ahead of his start against the Brewers on Friday. Whisenhunt officially joins the 26-man roster, taking the place of Landen Roupp (knee). The 24-year-old Whisenhunt made his MLB debut in late July with three starts for the Giants, posting a 5.02 ERA and a 12:7 K:BB across 14.1 innings before being sent back down Aug. 12. Whisenhunt's numbers at Sacramento weren't much better, as he tallied a 4.37 ERA and 92:32 K:BB across 103 innings.
