  Wagner went 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and two runs scored in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays. The 26-year-old doesn't have a clear defensive home on the diamond, but his bat could earn him semi-regular playing time on a Blue Jays squad that loves to mix and match. Wagner is batting .273 (9-for-33) this spring with five doubles and a 4:6 BB:K, and he handled himself capably in his big-league debut in 2024, delivering a .305/.337/.451 slash line over 86 plate appearances after being acquired from the Astros. Most of his action in the majors last year came at second base, but with Andres Gimenez now calling the keystone home for the Jays, Wagner will have to battle for playing time at third base and DH while also occasionally spelling Vladimir Guerrero at first base.

  Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Thursday that Wagner (knee) is "doing everything" during the first week of spring training and will see some exposure to first base and third base in addition to second base during camp, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. After getting his first call to the big leagues last August, Wagner played 172 of his 175 innings in the field at the keystone and slashed .305/.337/.451 over 86 plate appearances before being shut down for the season in late September for arthroscopic surgery to address inflammation in his left knee. Wagner was cleared to resume baseball activities early in the offseason and looks like he'll be operating under no restrictions during camp, where he'll get reps at three different infield spots with the hope of improving his chances of winning a spot on the Opening Day roster. While he may not have a direct path to a full-time gig at any one position, Wagner's versatility and contact skills could be enough for him to settle into a near-everyday role.

  Wagner will have his left knee scoped Thursday and is expected to be sidelined from baseball activities for about a month, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. The 26-year-old was placed on the 60-day injured list Tuesday due to knee inflammation, and he'll undergo the procedure to address the issue. Wagner should have enough recovery time to be healthy for the start of spring training. He played well in his first taste of the majors this year and had a .305/.337/.451 slash line with two homers and 11 RBI in 24 games.

Wagner's knee injury could help explain why he hasn't played in a game since Friday, and his move to the 60-day IL will officially put an early end to his season. The 26-year-old infielder will finish 2024 with a solid .305/.337/.451 slash line alongside two homers and 11 RBI through 24 games in the majors. In corresponding roster moves, Bo Bichette (calf) was activated from the 10-day IL, and Nick Robertson was claimed off waivers from the Angels (and optioned to Triple-A Buffalo) to fill the open 40-man spot.
