  Pena has focused on being more selective with his swings this spring, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Pena adjusted his swing in preparation for the 2024 season, and this year, his focus has been laying off bad pitches in live batting practice. Across 1,842 career plate appearances, Pena has only a 4.9 percent walk rate but has still managed exactly a 100 wRC+. Despite this report, it is worth noting that Pena has not drawn a walk across 10 plate appearances in Grapefruit League action.

  Pena agreed to a one-year, $4.1 million contract with the Astros to avoid arbitration Thursday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Pena will receive a nice raise in his first year of arbitration eligibility after serving as Houston's primary shortstop since making his debut in 2022. The 27-year-old posted 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases with a .266/.308/.394 slash line over 157 games in the 2024 regular season.

  Pena went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's win over the Angels. Pena posted hits in two of his first three at-bats while also stealing second and coming around to score a run over that stretch. It marked the shortstop's second straight two-hit performance and the fifth in his last nine games. Over that span he's batting .282 (11-for-39) with one homer, three RBI and three runs scored. The stolen base was his 17th of the season and his second this month.

  Pena went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run Saturday against the Diamondbacks. Pena ended a 12-game stretch without a home run, during which he hit only .178 with five RBI and four runs scored. Despite the recent drought, Pena has seen his power production bounce back in 2024, as his ISO has jumped from .118 to .134. Overall, he's delivered a well-rounded line that includes a career-high 68 RBI and 16 steals.
