Weathers (3-6) took the loss against the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and no walks while striking out five batters over 4.1 innings. Weathers made his first major-league start since June 7 following a stint on the injured list due to a finger injury. All of Los Angeles' runs against the left-hander came via the long ball, and the majority of the damage came in a five-run fourth inning that included a two-run blast by Tommy Edman and a three-run shot off the bat of Enrique Hernandez. The barrage of homers hasn't been typical for Weathers this season -- prior to Wednesday, he hadn't given up multiple home runs in any of his 13 outings and had surrendered a tolerable eight long balls over 71 frames overall.

Weathers (finger) covered 2.2 innings in his second rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Jacksonville, striking out five while giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks. After making his first rehab start at Single-A Jupiter this past Tuesday, Weathers jumped up a few rungs on the minor-league ladder for his second outing. He tossed 64 pitches (39 strikes) in the appearance, but the Marlins have yet to decide on Weathers' next step. He'll presumably be evaluated over the next day or two before Miami decides whether he'll be ready to return from the 60-day injured list to make his next start with the Marlins, or if he'll remain on assignment in the minors for one more outing.

Weathers (finger) is expected to throw three innings and around 50 pitches in a live batting practice session Tuesday, MLB.com reports. Weathers looks set to increase the volume of his throwing after he tossed two innings and 35 pitches in his first live BP session Friday. The southpaw has been on the shelf since June 8 with a left index finger strain but looks poised to return from the 60-day injured list at some point in the second half of September.

Weathers (finger) completed a flat-ground throwing session Monday and is hopeful to resume throwing bullpen sessions in two weeks, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Weathers was placed on the injured list June 8 with a left index finger strain and has had a slow recovery thus far. Though his workout Monday is a step in the right direction, Weathers isn't on pace to face hitters until late August in a best-case scenario, and he'll require multiple rehab starts after that before a return from the 60-day IL becomes a possibility. The southpaw might not have enough time to get fully stretched out for a starting role during his rehab assignment, so if he comes off the IL in September, he might have to work out of the bullpen.

Weathers (finger) will be re-evaluated later this week and could begin a throwing program, MLB.com reports. The southpaw is currently rehabbing at the Marlins' complex in Jupiter after being pulled from his June 7 start due to a strained index finger on his pitching hand. Weathers was having a breakout campaign before the injury, posting a 3.55 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67:20 K:BB through 71 innings, and if he gets cleared to throw before the weekend, he could still rejoin the big-league rotation before the All-Star break.
