• Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Sidelined with forearm strain

  Weathers will begin the season on the injured list due to a left forearm strain, Isaac Azout of FishOnFirst.com reports. Weathers had been having a fantastic spring, allowing just two runs (one earned) while striking out 11 batters through 11.1 frames. However, he came away from his last start with discomfort in his forearm and is expected to miss the first 4-to-6 weeks of the regular season. The Marlins now have an open spot in their rotation to fill before Opening Day, and manager Clayton McCullough has mentioned Janson Junk as a leading candidate to fill in while Weathers is out, per Azout.

  Weathers gave up one unearned run on one hit and two walks over four innings in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. He struck out one. The 25-year-old southpaw built up to 65 pitches (37 strikes) in another sharp outing. Weathers has a 0.79 ERA and 11:8 K:BB through 11.1 innings this spring, and he's locked into a rotation spot for the Marlins to begin the season.

  Weathers has lost 20 pounds this offseason, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Weathers has a high insulin resistance but has been able to drop weight over the winter while following a Keto diet. The left-hander missed three months during the 2024 season due to a left index finger strain, but he pitched well when on the mound in collecting a 3.63 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 80:24 K:BB over 86.2 frames. Weathers ended the season healthy and will have some deep-league fantasy appeal in 2025, although wins could be difficult to come by on the Marlins.

  Weathers (4-6) allowed a run on six hits and two walks while striking out two over five innings to earn the win over the Twins on Tuesday. Weathers did better in his second start back from a finger injury. The Marlins gave him a four-run lead in the second inning, and he only gave one run back on Royce Lewis' RBI single in the third. Weathers has generally pitched well this year, allowing two runs or fewer in seven of his 15 starts. He's at a 3.81 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 74:22 K:BB across 80.1 innings. Weathers is tentatively projected to make one more start at Toronto this weekend.

• Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Tosses 64 pitches in rehab outing

  Weathers (finger) covered 2.2 innings in his second rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Jacksonville, striking out five while giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks. After making his first rehab start at Single-A Jupiter this past Tuesday, Weathers jumped up a few rungs on the minor-league ladder for his second outing. He tossed 64 pitches (39 strikes) in the appearance, but the Marlins have yet to decide on Weathers' next step. He'll presumably be evaluated over the next day or two before Miami decides whether he'll be ready to return from the 60-day injured list to make his next start with the Marlins, or if he'll remain on assignment in the minors for one more outing.
