• Red Sox's Triston Casas: Will not platoon

  Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Casas will be the everyday first baseman, including against left-handers, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. "He will play. He's going to play against lefties and righties," Cora said. "We're not going to platoon at first base." This appears to be the next step in the evolution for Casas, who sometimes sat against particularly tough lefties over his first two seasons. Casas was in the starting lineup the last two times Boston faced an ace left-hander this spring -- last Saturday against Chris Sale and Tuesday versus Max Fried. Casas had two hits off Sale, including a monster opposite-field home run, before Fried struck him out twice. The 25-year-old first baseman is batting .167 (12-for-30) with two home runs, four RBI, six walks and 13 strikeouts through 12 Cactus League games.

  Casas went 1-for-2 with a walk and a three-run home run in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins. This was Casas' second game back in Grapefruit League action after missing a week battling an illness that swept through Boston's camp. He swatted his first spring home run in the first inning. The lefty-hitting first baseman is batting .133 (2-for-15) through seven Grapefruit League games.

  Casas has been scratched from the lineup for Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates due to an illness, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports. Casas is the latest victim of a bug that's been making its way through the Red Sox clubhouse. He should be ready to play in a day or two. Nathan Hickey will sub in at first base and bat cleanup Tuesday.

  Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Monday that the team is "not shopping" Casas in trade talks this offseason, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. We wouldn't have expected him to say otherwise, and Breslow did acknowledge that he's discussed Casas with other clubs in trade scenarios this winter. Breslow also noted that he's looking for a right-handed bat, and a trade of the left-handed hitting Casas still seems possible as the Red Sox seek to balance out their lineup.

  Casas isn't in Boston's lineup for Thursday's game against the Yankees, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. The lefty-hitting Casas will sit down to begin Thursday's series opener as southpaw Nestor Cortes slated to toe the slab for New York. Connor Wong will fill the void at first base while Danny Jansen starts behind the plate and bats eighth.
