The Pirates optioned Ryan to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday. Ryan will make room for David Bednar (oblique) on the active roster. Since being called up Saturday, Ryan appeared in two games and allowed five runs over four innings. The 29-year-old has generated a 4.09 ERA over 22.0 innings with Indianapolis this season.

The Pirates recalled Ryan from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. Ryan holds a 3.00 ERA and 1.08 WHIP through 12 innings across nine appearances with the Pirates this season, and he will now return to the majors to provide additional bullpen depth. He will replace Josh Fleming, who was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Ryan has permitted four runs over 5.1 relief innings with Pittsburgh this season. The Pirates have not announced a corresponding move, but it could be Colin Holderman (illness) returning from the injured list.
