Alvarez will undergo surgery in the coming days to repair a sprained UCL in his right thumb, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Alvarez suffered the injury in late August, but he elected to delay surgery until the offseason and returned to play in early September. The operation could delay Alvarez's offseason workouts a bit, but it should not affect his availability for the beginning of spring training.

Alvarez is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs. After starting and homering in both of the first two games of the series, Alvarez will get a breather for Thursday's finale. Luis Torrens is catching and batting sixth for the Mets.

Alvarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals. He'll give way to Luis Torrens behind the plate Sunday after starting at catcher in the first two games of the series. Alvarez has gone 8-for-25 (.320 average) with two home runs in his last seven games.

Alvarez (triceps) will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Padres. Alvarez was lifted for a pinch runner in the eighth inning of Tuesday's 8-3 win after he was plunked by a Bradgley Rodriguez 100-mph fastball during his fourth and final plate appearance. Though Alvarez -- who has been playing through a broken pinkie finger on his left hand and a torn UCL in his right thumb -- has now been hit on the left arm by a pitch three times in the last three weeks, he'll be able to fight through any lingering soreness and step back in behind the dish Wednesday.

Alvarez isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Phillies. Alvarez will get a day to regroup after going just 2-for-18 with nine strikeouts in six games since returning from the injured list. Hayden Senger will take over behind the plate and bat ninth.
