Fletcher elected to become a free agent Wednesday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Fletcher had been booted off the White Sox' 40-man roster and has decided to test things out in free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment. The 28-year-old outfielder has slashed only .233/.280/.325 in parts of three big-league seasons and might have to settle for a minor-league contract this winter.

The White Sox outrighted Fletcher to Triple-A Charlotte on Monday. Fletcher has been outrighted previously, so he has the ability to decline the assignment and become a free agent if he wants. The outfielder has managed just a .208/.254/.282 batting line over parts of two seasons with the White Sox.

Fletcher went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a double in Sunday's win over Washington. Fletcher doubled in the second inning before launching a two-run blast in the fourth. He was brought up from Triple-A Columbus in early September and posted a .219/.265/.469 slash line in 34 plate appearances. Fletcher's home run Sunday was his first at the MLB level since September of 2024, and his first multi-hit game since his 2025 debut Sept. 5.

Fletcher went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored Friday against the Tigers. Fletcher had his contract selected Friday, and he hit ninth and started in center field the same day. He doubled in both of his first two at-bats and came around to score on each occasion. It remains to be seen how consistent his at-bats will be, as Michael Taylor, Brooks Baldwin and Will Robertson are also capable of manning center field.

The White Sox selected the contract of Fletcher from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday. Fletcher has slashed .260/.317/.453 with 17 home runs, 68 RBI, 56 runs scored, seven stolen bases and a 29:87 BB:K across 446 trips to the plate at Triple-A. He appeared in 72 regular-season games for the White Sox last season, slashing .206/.252/.256 over 241 plate appearances. Fletcher figures to serve as a reserve outfielder for Chicago, though he could push for playing time in center field.
