Red Sox's Triston Casas: Losing starts at first base

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Casas will lose starts at first base to Justin Turner, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.

Casas made a couple of fielding miscues during Monday's loss, prompting the manager to say "he needs to be better." The 38-year-old Turner started at first Monday and demonstrated a lack of familiarity with the position during the ninth inning when he failed to catch a low throw-- he's played there 41 times during a 15-year career. Casas, who showed good fielding skills during a September 2022 callup, has gone backwards in 2023. He ranks 33rd with minus-4 outs above average and last among qualified first baseman with minus-6 defensive runs saved.

  • Nate Lowe 1B | CIN

Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Goes yard Tuesday

Lowe went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's loss to the Angels.

Lowe went deep for the eighth time this season, launching a 397-foot blast in the third inning. The two-run shot was a welcomed sight for the 27-year-old slugger, as he is well behind his pace from last year. Lowe has struggled with strikeouts of late, having recorded 14 over his last 28 at-bats with at least one in each of his last 15 games.

  • Josh Bell DH | MIN

Guardians' Josh Bell: Knocks sixth homer

Bell went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the Padres.

Bell has homered in consecutive contests, and three of his six long balls on the season have come since May 31. The missing power has been a bit of an oddity for Bell -- he's slugged lower than .400 just once in his first seven major-league seasons, but he's at just .392 this year. The first baseman is also batting just .241 with 31 RBI, 14 runs scored and 14 doubles over 60 games.

  • Luke Raley RF | SEA

Rays' Luke Raley: Sitting against southpaw

Raley is not in the starting lineup Tuesday versus the Athletics.

Raley will take a seat as the Rays face off with southpaw Hogan Harris as the A's primary pitcher Tuesday. Harold Ramirez will take over at designated hitter and bat third against Oakland.

  • Orioles' Ryan Mountcastle: Placed on 10-day IL

Mountcastle (illness) was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 10, by the Orioles on Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Mountcastle will miss at least a week while he recovers from a bout of vertigo. The right-handed hitter has been able to swing in the cage, so this could be a minimum stint on the IL before he returns. Mark Kolozsvary had his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding transaction.

  • Orioles' Ryan Mountcastle: Available off bench

Mountcastle (illness) is available off the bench Tuesday, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Mountcastle is missing a second straight start due to illness but is feeling much better. There would seem to be a good chance that he's back in the lineup Wednesday. As for Tuesday, Ryan O'Hearn is getting the call at first base.

  • Ryan O'Hearn 1B | PIT

Orioles' Ryan O'Hearn: Batting cleanup again Tuesday

O'Hearn is starting at first base and batting cleanup in Tuesday's game versus the Blue Jays, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

He's filling in at first base for Ryan Mountcastle (illness) and is getting his second straight start in the cleanup spot. O'Hearn homered and reached base five times from the cleanup spot Sunday versus the Royals.

  • Orioles' Ryan Mountcastle: Out again Tuesday

Mountcastle (illness) isn't in the Orioles' lineup for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Mountcastle's illness has kept him out since Friday and will sideline him for at least one more contest Tuesday. While Mouncastle continues to recover, Ryan O'Hearn will take over at first base, moving Gunnar Henderson into the DH spot and Ramon Urias in at third base, batting eighth.

  • Ty France 1B | SD

Mariners' Ty France: Jacks three-run blast Monday

France went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in an 8-1 win over the Marlins on Monday.

France's 420-foot shot to left center with J.P. Crawford and Julio Rodriguez aboard doubled the Mariners' lead to 6-0 at the time. The 28-year-old France extended his hitting streak to eight games with the big blast, a sample during which he boasts a .455 average and 1.183 OPS across 35 plate appearances.

  • Tigers' Spencer Torkelson: Drives in three runs

Torkelson went 3-for-6 with a home run and three RBI in Monday's win over Atlanta.

Torkelson belted a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning before providing the walk-off hit in the 10th. He collected three hits for the third time this season and the first since May 9. Torkelson is now slashing .232/.315/.371 with six homers and 29 RBI through 270 plate appearances on the year. He has four extra-base hits over the last eight games despite going 7-for-32 (.219) in the process.
