Angels' Reid Detmers: Fans 12 in Friday's loss
Reid Detmers (4-9) took the loss Friday, giving up four runs on eight hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over five innings as the Los Angeles Angels fell 5-2 to the Rangers. He struck out 12.The southpaw displayed both the good and bad sides of his profile, generating 32 called or swinging strikes among his 95 pitches but serving up back-to-back homers to Wyatt Langford and Adolis Garcia in the first inning, before Carson Kelly tagged him for another long ball in the fourth. Over five September starts, Detmers posted a brutal 8.14 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 3.0 HR/9 despite a superficially impressive 39:11 K:BB through 24.1 innings. The 25-year-old still has four years of team control and is only heading into his first year of arbitration eligibility this winter, however, so it's unlikely the Angels will give up on his upside quite yet.

The Los Angeles Angels recalled Reid Detmers from Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday. He's scheduled to start the Angels' series opener versus the Dodgers in Anaheim on Tuesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.The left-hander will be back with the Angels for the first time since early June after he was banished to the minors following a string of poor starts. He had largely struggled to the right the ship over his first two months at Salt Lake, but Detmers settled into a groove over his final three starts with the Triple-A club (1.29 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 29:7 K:BB in 21 innings) to earn another chance with the Angels. With the Angels recently adding rookies Jack Kochanowicz, Caden Dana and Samuel Aldegheri to a rotation that already included Tyler Anderson and Griffin Canning, the promotion of Detmers now gives the club six starters. The Angels could keep a six-man rotation in place over the final four weeks of the season to help limit the innings of the young starters while also affording them an additional day of rest between starts.

Reid Detmers allowed one run on three hits and two walks over eight innings while striking out 11 batters in his start for Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday.Detmers has been with Salt Lake since early June following a string of poor starts in the majors. Angels' Reid Detmers: Fans 11 in minor-league start
Reid Detmers tossed six innings for Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks while striking out 11 batters.Detmers was optioned to Triple-A on June 1 after a series of poor starts with the Los Angeles Angels. His first minor-league outing since 2022 didn't go well, as he gave up seven runs over five frames in a June 7 start versus Sugar Land. The southpaw has improved since, and over his past two outings with Salt Lake he's struck out 21 hitters across 12 frames, though he's also surrendered eight earned runs over that stretch. Overall, Detmers has logged a 5.70 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 41:9 K:BB across 30 frames through five starts in the minors. Angels pitching coach Barry Enright said last week that Detmers was "trending in the right direction" in terms of improvement when addressing how the club will fill the rotation spot of Patrick Sandoval, who has since been ruled out for the season after undergoing an internal brace procedure to repair the UCL in his pitching elbow. That said, it's unclear what the team's plans are for Detmers moving forward. The Angels rotation has had a lot of moving parts of late -- in addition to Sandoval's injury, Zach Plesac was demoted to Triple-A on Saturday, Jose Soriano (abdomen) is slated to return from the injured list Tuesday, and Davis Daniel was promoted from the minors to make his first start of the season last Thursday. In addition, Roansy Contreras was moved from the bullpen to make a spot start last Wednesday and is slated to get another turn in the rotation this coming Thursday versus Oakland.
