  • Nico Hoerner 2B | CHC

Cubs' Nico Hoerner: Out of lineup Tuesday

Hoerner (hamstring) is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Cardinals.

Hoerner is considered day-to-day after leaving Monday's series opener versus St. Louis because of a mild left hamstring strain. He said he expects to avoid the IL. Christopher Morel is playing second base Tuesday and Nick Madrigal will get a turn at leadoff. Patrick Wisdom is on the bench.

  • Ji-Hwan Bae 2B | NYM

Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Returns to lineup Tuesday

Bae (ankle) is back in the lineup Tuesday against the Rockies, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Bae will start at second base and bat ninth versus the Rockies and right-hander Connor Seabold after being limited by an ankle injury over the last handful of games. The 23-year-old has racked up 14 stolen bases on the year, though he's slashing just .239/.300/.326 across 101 plate appearances.

  • Taylor Motter 2B | STL

Cardinals' Taylor Motter: Accepts outright assignment

The Cardinals outrighted Motter to Triple-A Memphis on Monday.

Motter was recently removed from the Cardinals' 40-man roster for the second time this season but is electing to stick around in the organization as a utility man at the Triple-A level. The 33-year-old has hit .200 with a 36.4 percent strikeout rate over 22 plate appearances in the majors this season.

  • Nico Hoerner 2B | CHC

Cubs' Nico Hoerner: Nursing hamstring issue

Hoerner left Monday's game against the Cardinals with left hamstring tightness, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. He went 0-for-3 prior to departing the contest.

Hoerner suffered the injury when running from first to third on Dansby Swanson's fifth-inning double. He's likely headed for further evaluation to determine whether he'll require a trip to the injured list.

  • Nico Hoerner 2B | CHC

Cubs' Nico Hoerner: Departs with injury

Hoerner left Monday's game against the Cardinals due to an undisclosed injury, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Hoerner suffered the injury while running from first to third base on a base knock. The details of the injury are unknown at this time.

  • Josh Rojas 3B | CHW

Diamondbacks' Josh Rojas: Sitting versus lefty

Rojas is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup for Monday's game versus the Marlins.

Rojas will yield to Evan Longoria at third base with the Marlins throwing left-hander Braxton Garrett. He's just 1-for-12 at the plate so far in May.

  • Jake Alu LF | WAS

    Nationals' Jake Alu: Gets call-up

The Nationals recalled Alu from Triple-A Rochester on Monday.

Alu hasn't done much so far this season with Rochester, batting .247/.322/.377 with two homers through 21 games. He was excellent between Double-A Harrisburg and Rochester in 2022, though, with an .871 OPS, 20 dingers and 15 steals. Alu can play all over the field and should operate in a super-utility role with the Nats. He'll be making his major-league debut when he gets into a game.

  • Miguel Vargas 2B | CHW

Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Receives rare day off

Vargas is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Brewers, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

After closing the Dodgers' weekend series in San Diego with an 0-for-8 showing at the dish over the final two games, Vargas will get a chance to rest Monday. Mookie Betts will move from the outfield to cover second base while Vargas hits the bench for the first time since April 27.

  • Cardinals' Brendan Donovan: Starting again in left field

Donovan is starting in left field and batting sixth for the Cardinals on Monday versus the Cubs, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

The trickle-down effect of the Cards' bizarre decision to move Willson Contreras off catcher means Donovan will play a lot more in the outfield while Nolan Gorman handles second base. However, when Tyler O'Neill (back) returns it will create another logjam.

  • Ji-Hwan Bae 2B | NYM

Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae: Remains out Monday

Bae (ankle) is not in the starting lineup Monday against the Rockies.

Bae will remain on the bench for a third straight game as he continues to nurse an ankle injury. With left-hander Kyle Freeland on the mound for Colorado, it's possible Bae wouldn't be in the lineup regardless of health. Rodolfo Castro will take over at second base while Chris Owings will draw the start at shortstop and bat eighth in the series opener.
