  • Nationals' Luis Garcia: Back on bench versus lefty

Garcia is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Red Sox.

After Garcia produced five extra-base hits during the Nationals' weekend series against the Orioles, manager Blake Butera opted to keep the left-handed-hitting first baseman in the lineup against lefty Ranger Suarez in Monday's series opener in Boston. Garcia drew a walk and provided a base hit in his four plate appearances in Monday's 6-3 loss, but it won't be enough to keep him in the lineup for a matchup with another lefty (Connelly Early) on Tuesday. Andres Chaparro will spell Garcia at first base and will bat second.

Additionally, the first baseman has blasted 11 long balls to go with 27 RBI over his last 28 contests (94 at-bats). Through 265 plate appearances overall, Garcia is hitting .273 with 14 big flies, 13 doubles and 50 RBI.

Garcia has been on an otherworldly run at the plate of late, going 10-for-19 with six homers in his last six contests. He's now slashing .279/.307/.543 with 16 long balls (two shy of his career high), 55 RBI, 33 runs scored and two steals across 270 plate appearances this year.

Garcia went 2-for-6 with two home runs and six RBI in Friday's 14-1 win over the Diamondbacks.

Considering he has just seven long balls this season, Friday's effort was unexpected. The infielder is batting .263 with a .745 OPS, 37 RBI, 23 runs scored, 10 doubles, three triples and two stolen bases over 58 contests. Garcia has done pretty well of late, going 12-for-40 (.300) with four homers and 15 RBI over his last 11 games.

  • Nationals' Luis Garcia: Sitting again Thursday

Garcia is out of the starting lineup for the series finale against the Mets on Thursday.

Washington will trot out Andres Chaparro at first base for a second straight game as the left-handed-batting Garcia rides the bench against Mets southpaw David Peterson. Despite not receiving the start, Garcia pinch hit for Chaparro in the fifth inning Wednesday when the Mets brought in right-hander Austin Warren and remained in the game, going 1-for-2 with a single.

  • Nationals' Luis Garcia: Idle against lefty

Garcia is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.

The Reds are sending southpaw Nick Lodolo to the mound Wednesday, so Garcia will duck out of the starting nine to open up first base for platoon mate Curtis Mead. Garcia missed four straight starts last week due to a minor wrist sprain, but the time off appears to have done him some good. He returned to the lineup Saturday went a collective 8-for-14 with four extra-base hits, five RBI and four runs over his last three games.

  • Nationals' Luis Garcia: Goes deep twice in Cincy

  • Nationals' Luis Garcia: Sitting again Friday

Garcia (wrist) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Marlins, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.

It's a fourth straight absence for Garcia due to a minor right wrist/hand sprain. A trip to the injured list hasn't been viewed as necessary to this point, but that may change soon if the 25-year-old misses more time. Curtis Mead is picking up another start at first base for the Nationals.

  • Nationals' Luis Garcia: Held out again Thursday

Garcia (wrist) remains out of the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Twins.

Garcia has now missed three straight starts with a minor right wrist/hand sprain. The Nationals do not expect him to require a trip to the injured list, but they might have to reevaluate that stance if Garcia is still unable to play this weekend in Miami. Curtis Mead will draw another start at first base Thursday in Garcia's stead.

  • Nationals' Luis Garcia: Remains out of lineup

Garcia (wrist/hand) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins.

Curtis Mead will make a second straight start at first base in place of Garcia, who is considered day-to-day after making an early exit from Sunday's 3-2 win over the Brewers due to a minor right wrist/hand sprain. According to MLB.com, Garcia isn't expected to require a stint on the injured list, though the club's tune could change if he's not able to return to the lineup for the start of the Nationals' weekend series in Miami.
