Mets' Jeff McNeil: Being groomed for utility role

McNeil is being prepared for a utility role with the Mets, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

McNeil has been primarily a second baseman in the minor leagues but has been given some time at third base recently. The Mets have a hole at third currently, with Todd Frazier out with a rib injury and Jose Reyes hitting a miserable .164/.246/.227. McNeil could be the answer there, as he's hit an excellent .344/.415/.629 through 79 games split between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Las Vegas so far this year, though he's also a 26-year-old with minimal prospect pedigree and questions about his defense.

  • Ketel Marte 2B | ARI

Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Receives breather Friday

Marte is not in the lineup against Atlanta on Friday.

Marte will receive a day off following four straight starts as Daniel Descalso gets the nod at second base for the series opener. After a blistering start to the month of June, Marte is hitting just .217/.319/.417 since June 22.

  • Pirates' Chris Bostick: Recovering from appendectomy

Bostick underwent an emergency appendectomy two weeks ago and is expected to be activated from Triple-A Indianapolis' 7-day disabled list before the end of the month, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.

Bostick was hitting .291/.343/.437 across 285 plate appearances at Indianapolis this season prior to being shut down in late June following the procedure. The 25-year-old possesses a spot on the 40-man roster and could be recalled from Triple-A when rosters expand in September to offer the Pirates another utility option.

  • Amed Rosario SS | NYY

Mets' Amed Rosario: Out of lineup Thursday

Rosario is not in the lineup against Washington on Thursday.

Rosario will take a seat following four straight starts, including a 2-for-3 showing with a double and one run scored during Wednesday's victory over Philadelphia. In his place, Jose Reyes will start at shortstop and bat eighth.

  • Ozzie Albies 2B | ATL

Braves' Ozzie Albies: Blasts two homers in win over Jays

Albies went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in Wednesday's 9-5 win over the Blue Jays.

Albies now has an even 20 homers on the year to go along with a .288/.325/.529 slash line, as well as his first appearance in the All-Star Game.

  • Nico Hoerner 2B | CHC

Cubs' Nico Hoerner: Moves to Low-A

Hoerner was promoted to Low-A South Bend on Wednesday, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic Chicago reports.

Hoerner was selected in the first round of the 2018 first-year player draft by the Cubs. After hitting .318 with a home run and two RBI through seven games at Eugene, he'll move on to the next level.

  • Ketel Marte 2B | ARI

Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Generates two hits, two walks

Marte went 2-for-5 with a double, two walks and a run scored in the Diamondbacks' 4-3 loss to the Padres on Sunday in 16 innings.

After a tough series against the Cardinals earlier in the week, Marte rebounded in swift fashion during the four-game set against the Padres. He started three of those contests and went a collective 5-for-12 with a pair of home runs, two doubles and four walks. Marte has looked like a completely different player since the beginning of June, slashing .298/.357/.632 while smacking seven of his eight home runs of the season during the last month and change.

  • Amed Rosario SS | NYY

Mets' Amed Rosario: Not in Sunday's lineup

Rosario is out of the lineup for Sunday's series finale against Tampa Bay, Matt Ehalt of The Bergen Record reports.

Rosario is only 2-for-21 over his last 11 games, so he will take a seat against Tampa Bay starter Nathan Eovaldi. Jose Reyes will start at shortstop and bat eighth in his absence.

  • Ketel Marte 2B | ARI

Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Cracks pinch-hit homer

Marte hit a pinch-hit solo home run in Saturday's win over the Padres.

Marte capped off a historic night for the Diamondbacks, bringing their total to 20 runs (a club record) with his eighth homer of the season. Seven of his eight home runs have come since June 1 -- he had just one long ball in his first 52 games of the season. Marte should continue to start close to every day between second base and shortstop.

  • Ozzie Albies 2B | ATL

    Braves' Ozzie Albies: Scores twice

Albies went 2-for-5 with two runs scored Saturday against the Brewers.

Albies now has a five-game hitting streak, four of which have been multi-hit efforts. That has aided him in his run-scoring potential, as he continues to lead the National League in runs scored.
