  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Taking batting practice

Henderson (oblique) will take batting practice Tuesday, Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun reports.

Henderson has been hitting, but this will be the first time he's taken batting practice since he reported to camp with some left oblique discomfort. The young infielder's Grapefruit League debut looks to be right around the corner and could take place later this week, provided he continues to progress without incident.

  • Jose Miranda 3B | MIN

Twins' Jose Miranda: Collects two hits Monday

Miranda (shoulder) went 2-for-3 with one double, one RBI and one run scored in Monday's exhibition against the Yankees. He started at DH and the Twins plan to ease him into action for a few weeks before using him at first base or third base, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Miranda underwent offseason surgery to remove scar tissue from his right labrum and rotator cuff, and he's since been cleared for game action. He looked sharp in his chances at the dish Monday, as he collected a base knock in the top of the first inning and doubled home the first run of the game in the third. Now that Miranda has returned to health, he'll set his sights on earning playing time either at the hot corner behind Royce Lewis or at first base, where he'll compete with Carlos Santana and Alex Kirilloff.

  • Curtis Mead 3B | WAS

Rays' Curtis Mead: Roster spot not guaranteed

Mead may lose out on a roster spot to begin the season after the Rays signed Amed Rosario, John Romano of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Mead was expected to have a strong chance to make the Opening Day roster as a backup at second and third base. However, Rosario is also a versatile infielder and right-handed batter, and this fits a similar projected role as Mead. Positively, manager Kevin Cash has praised Mead for the progress he's made with the glove, which could open up an opportunity later in the season, if not immediately.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Could make spring debut soon

Manager Brandon Hyde said Sunday that Henderson (oblique) is hitting and throwing every day and could make his Grapefruit League debut by the end of this week, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

The 22-year-old has been delayed early in spring training by an oblique injury, but his recent progression is encouraging. The Orioles are likely to remain cautious in an attempt to avoid rushing Henderson back too soon, but a spring debut in early March now seems likely.

  • Gio Urshela 3B | MIN

Tigers' Gio Urshela: Not viewed as platoon bat

Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said Friday that he does not view Urshela as a strict platoon bat, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Urshela was much better against lefties than righties during an abbreviated sample in 2023, but his career splits are pretty even, as he's posted a .773 OPS versus southpaws and .734 OPS against right-handers. The 32-year-old will be in the mix to receive ample playing time at third base in Detroit and is also capable of filling in at all other infield positions. It's possible the Tigers' addition of Urshela will lead to Matt Vierling spending more time in the outfield.

  • Brian Anderson RF | ATL

Mariners' Brian Anderson: Joins Mariners as NRI

Anderson signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Friday that includes an invite to big-league camp, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

The 30-year-old struggled to a .678 OPS in 96 games with Milwaukee last season and was released by the club in early October. Anderson would provide depth at third base and right field if he makes the roster, though his most likely position would be the hot corner since Luis Urias likely doesn't have a firm grip on the starting role.

  • Guardians' Deyvison De Los Santos: Taking reps in corner outfield

De Los Santos has been working out in both corner outfield spots this spring, Jason Lloyd of The Athletic reports.

A Rule 5 pick, De Los Santos has never played anywhere other than third and first base in pro ball, but the Guardians are testing out his versatility with the idea that it would make it easier to carry him on the roster. Cleveland does have clear openings both in right field and at designated hitter, but should he stick on the 26-man roster it's unlikely the 20-year-old De Los Santos will play much in the majors as he attempts to skip over the Triple-A level.

  • Gio Urshela 3B | MIN

Tigers' Gio Urshela: Signs with Detroit

Urshela signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Tigers on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Urshela slashed .299/.329/.374 with 24 RBI in 228 plate appearances with the Angels last year before a fractured pelvis put an early end to his season in June. Now fully recovered from his injury, the 32-year-old infielder will join his fourth team in as many years. Though he primarily serves as a third baseman, Urshela has experience at all four infield positions, and he gives Detroit a bat capable of finding success versus left-handed pitchers (.790 OPS since 2021).

  • Anthony Rendon 3B | LAA

Angels' Anthony Rendon: Projected to hit cleanup

Angels manager Ron Washington said Thursday that Rendon (lower leg) will be the team's cleanup hitter this season, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

That's for days he's not on the injured list, of course. Rendon has played just 200 of a possible 546 games in four seasons with the Angels due to a variety of injuries but doesn't appear to be under any restrictions this spring. It's possible the Angels elect to use him often at designated hitter in 2024 in hopes that it will help keep him on the field.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Progressing well

Henderson (oblique) said Thursday that he is progressing well in his recovery from an oblique injury, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Henderson has been able to increase his hitting and fielding workload in recent days as he builds up slowly after suffering what the Orioles are calling an "aggravation" of his left oblique. The 22-year-old expects to only miss a week or so of Grapefruit League games. A unanimous choice for AL Rookie of the Year last season, Henderson will remain highly sought after in drafts despite the injury.
