Dodgers' Will Smith: Plays hero off bench

Smith hit a walk-off solo home run in his lone at-bat in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks.

Smith pinch hit for Dalton Rushing in the ninth inning and took Arizona reliever John Curtiss deep for the walk-off win. August wasn't kind to Smith -- while he hit three homers over 22 games, he batted just .159 (11-for-69) with 10 RBI and a 15:24 BB:K for the month. He's up to 17 homers, 60 RBI, 62 runs scored and two stolen bases while batting .293 with a .901 OPS through 107 contests this season.

  • Braves' Drake Baldwin: Receiving Sunday off

Baldwin is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies.

Baldwin went 2-for-4 in Saturday's 3-2 loss, which ended a stretch of 11 straight starts without a multi-hit performance. Sean Murphy will catch for rookie righty Hurston Waldrep in Sunday's series finale.

  • James McCann C | ARI

Diamondbacks' James McCann: Tending to tight back

McCann remains out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers due to low back tightness, MLB.com reports.

McCann had been scheduled to start behind the plate in the Diamondbacks' 3-0 win Friday, but he ended up being scratched shortly before first pitch due to the back issue. Arizona is viewing McCann as day-to-day and should be able to navigate his absence with Adrian Del Castillo available as a third option at catcher behind top backstop Gabriel Moreno.

  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Getting breather Sunday

Smith is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks.

Smith will head to the bench Sunday after starting the first two games of the series and going 0-for-5 with three walks and two strikeouts. Dalton Rushing will step in behind the plate to catch for righty Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

  • Rangers' Kyle Higashioka: Resting up Sunday

Higashioka is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics.

After starting in each of the last four games -- three at catcher, one at designated hitter -- Higashioka will retreat to the bench for the series finale in Sacramento. Jonah Heim will get the nod behind the dish in place of Higashioka on Sunday.

  • Athletics' Shea Langeliers: Getting breather Sunday

Langeliers is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers.

Langeliers started the past eight games but will receive Sunday off after batting .182 (6-for-33) with a homer and 11 strikeouts during that span. Willie MacIver will take over behind the plate for the series finale versus Texas.

  • Carson Kelly C | CHC

Cubs' Carson Kelly: Taking seat Sunday

Kelly is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.

Kelly will hit the bench for the third time in four games while the Cubs go with Reese McGuire behind the plate. Dating back to Aug. 10, Kelly is slashing just .149/.226/.149, and his downturn in production appears to have pushed him into a timeshare with McGuire.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Not starting Sunday

Moreno is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers.

The 25-year-old was scheduled to receive a day off Friday before James McCann (back) was scratched, and Moreno will instead get that break Sunday. Adrian Del Castillo will start at catcher and bat fifth for the series finale in Los Angeles.

  • Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Not in Sunday's lineup

Goodman is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs.

Goodman started the first two games of the series and will receive Sunday off after going 4-for-8 with an RBI and a run scored. Braxton Fulford will take over behind the plate and bat seventh in the series finale.

  • Tigers' Dillon Dingler: Taking Sunday off

Dingler is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals.

Dingler appears to be getting a routine breather as the Tigers close out their series in Kansas City. Jake Rogers will step in behind the plate and will form a battery with starting pitcher Tarik Skubal.
