The Padres aren't expecting Guerra (elbow) to return from the 60-day injured list to pitch in 2021, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Guerra has been on the IL all season with a sprained UCL in his right elbow, but the Padres haven't formally announced that he'll require Tommy John surgery to address the injury. Even so, the 25-year-old apparently isn't on the verge of beginning a rehab assignment, so he'll be shut down for the season and turn his focus to getting healthy for next spring. Guerra is one of eight Padres pitchers currently residing on the IL who has been ruled out for the season.

Wingenter (elbow) has tossed two innings in two appearances with the Padres' ACL squad, striking out four without allowing any baserunners.

Wingenter pitched a scoreless inning Aug. 14 in his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery last July. He followed that with another scoreless frame Aug. 19. According to MLB.com, it isn't clear whether the right-hander will be able to return to the majors this season.

Lamet (hip) threw a bullpen session Thursday, per MLB.com.

The right-hander had been on the shelf since Aug. 12 while recovering from a hip infection, but he has now started to ramp back up in anticipation of a return. Lamet could be ready to rejoin the Padres at the beginning of September, and he is expected to pitch out of the bullpen once activated.

Moore didn't factor into the decision Friday against San Diego after allowing two runs on three hits and four walks while fanning four across 4.1 innings.

Moore has managed to bounce back from his Aug. 10 outing against the Dodgers in which he gave up three runs and recorded just one out -- he's now allowed just two runs across 10.1 innings (two starts) since rejoining the rotation. He's started in 11 of his 19 appearances, posting a 5.93 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across 60.2 total innings so far this season.

Neris (2-5) earned the win Friday against the Padres after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings, walking three and striking out one. He also tossed a wild pitch.

Neris needed 31 pitches to record the four outs that resulted in his second win of the season, but only 14 of those deliveries found the strike zone and he showed major command issues. The veteran reliever ended a streak of six straight appearances without issuing a free pass, but he has been pitching well in recent weeks. He has given up just one earned run over his last 14.2 innings of work, a span that covers 12 appearances.

Bednar gave up a hit across 1.1 scoreless innings in Friday's 4-0 win over the Cardinals. He struck out one batter.

He appeared with two outs in the seventh inning to preserve the team's three-run lead in a high-leverage situation. After Bednar retired St. Louis with a 14-pitch eighth inning, Chris Stratton closed out the ninth. Given Pittsburgh's desperate need for only its third win in August, it's hard to read into Stratton closing the game out when Bednar did the heavy lifting the two prior innings.

Jansen recorded the save Friday against the Mets after tossing a scoreless inning, striking out one.

Jansen has recorded the save in each of his last three appearances and has converted each of his last five chances as well, as he seems to have bounced back from a stretch of three straight blown saves in late July. The veteran reliever has given up just three earned runs across nine innings (eight appearances) this month, which translates to a 3.00 ERA -- but he has also has an excellent 0.89 WHIP and 11.0 K/9. Jansen owns a 2.92 ERA and is 26-for-31 in save chances this season.

Thompson was recalled from Triple-A Iowa ahead of Saturday's start against the Royals, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Thompson had been stretching out as a starter at Triple-A Iowa recently, and he posted a 0.68 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB in 14.2 scoreless innings across his last four outings. The right-hander will make his second major-league start at home against the Royals on Saturday, and he should have the chance to claim a long-term spot in the rotation if his success from the minors carries over to the big leagues. Right-hander Jake Jewell was sent down to make room for Thompson on the active roster.

Finnegan walked a batter and struck out a batter while throwing a scoreless ninth frame to pick up his fifth save of the year in a 4-1 win over the Brewers on Friday.

Finnegan had to work around a leadoff walk and was able to retire the next three batters he faced to secure the save. The 29-year-old has picked up all five of his saves since July 29 and owns a 0.93 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 5:2 K:BB over 9.2 innings since then. Although the Nationals are in tank mode, Finnegan should see the bulk of what few save opportunities remain.

Hernandez (0-1) took the loss Friday as the Marlins were downed 5-3 by the Reds, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out six.

The right-hander settled down after allowing two runs in the first inning, but Hernandez ran out of steam in the fifth and served up homers to Tyler Naquin and Joey Votto before getting the hook. He pounded the zone all night, with 54 of his 68 pitches going for strikes, but that also left him vulnerable to hard contact as only one of the five hits off him was a single. Hernandez has a 4.50 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB through 10 innings in his two starts since coming off the injured list.
