  • Martin Perez SP | ATL

    Martin Perez suffers defeat Tuesday

Rangers phenom Martin Perez has quietly made his case for American League Rookie of the Year this season as he took the mound Tuesday at home against Pittsburgh. He wasn't very sharp on this night.

Perez took the loss to fall to 9-4 on the season as he gave up four earned runs on nine hits and two walks over just five innings. He threw 73 pitches and struck out two batters. His ERA is at 3.60 on the year.

Perez, who entered the start Tuesday winning six straight outings, had that streak snapped against the Pirates. He should be able to rebound going forward and makes his next start Sunday against Oakland.

  • Carlos Carrasco dealing with family matter

Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco is not with the team for a few days, and is dealing with a family matter, according to WTAM.

Carrasco will miss a couple days. He'll rejoin the team as soon as everything is taken care of at home. Carrasco has a 6.65 ERA in 44 2/3 innings.

  • Taijuan Walker SP | LAA

Taijuan Walker solid in final outing

Mariners young pitching prospect Taijuan Walker toed the bump for the final time Monday night at home against the Astros. Walker went five strong innings and ended up taking a no-decision on the night.

Walker threw 84 pitches on the outing as he gave up two earned runs on five hits and a walk over his five frames. He managed eight strikeouts, but was denied of the win when Danny Farquhar blew the save in the ninth. Walker lowered his ERA to 3.60.

He gave up six earned runs over 15 innings with 12 strikeouts and a 1.00 WHIP. Walker started this season as the No. 5 prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB.com.

  • Chris Sale SP | ATL

    Chris Sale masterful in victory

White Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale took the mound Monday opposite Detroit's Max Scherzer. Sale was attempting to become the third pitcher to keep Scherzer from 20 wins and he managed to do just that.

Sale earned the win to improve to 11-12 on the year as he allowed just one earned run on four hits and one walk over eight outstanding innings. He struck out eight and allowed only a solo homer in the seventh inning. He threw 114 pitches and his ERA is now at 2.90 on the year.

The 24-year-old Sale has won his last two decisions and has allowed just four earned runs over his last three starts spanning 21 1/3 innings with 26 Ks. He's been very sharp of late for manager Robin Ventura. Sale makes his next start for the White Sox on Sunday against Cleveland.

  • Yu Darvish SP | SD

Yu Darvish adds injury to insult

Rangers ace Yu Darvish was able to rebound from walking six batters his last time out with a solid effort Monday at home against Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, an extreme pitching duel with Gerrit Cole and an injury ruined his night.

Darvish gave up just one earned run on four hits and a walk over seven outstanding innings. He struck out six and was at 81 pitches when he left the game. Darvish left after he felt cramping in his right leg and should be OK for his next start, FOX Sports reports.

Despite the solid effort, he suffered the loss to fall to 12-8. It was his third straight loss for the Rangers, though he pitched extremely well Monday. Darvish will make his next start for manager Ron Washington and the Rangers on Saturday against Oakland in an important American League West matchup as long as he is healthy.

  • Justin Masterson hopes to play catch soon

Indians starter Justin Masterson, who is out with an oblique injury, hopes to resume playing catch during an upcoming series against the White Sox, MLB.com reports Monday. The series begins Friday. Masterson had to leave his last start with a left oblique strain and could be done for the season if it doesn't improve quickly.

  • Kevin Gausman SP | CHC

Orioles not likely to use Kevin Gausman in rotation

The Orioles are unlikely to stick pitcher Kevin Gausman in the starting rotation over the remainder of the season, MLB.com reports. The Orioles are being careful with Gausman's workload and role.

"He was pretty sore; I don't want to say sore, but stiff after his last outing," manager Buck Showalter said. "He was a two- or three-day off for me. He was unavailable the last couple of days. I'm careful about yo-yoing young players that haven't done it. I don't think it's good business."

Gausman has made three relief appearances since rejoining the Orioles, going 1-1 and allowing two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.

  • James Paxton SP | BOS

James Paxton picks up the win in MLB debut

The left-hander allowed two runs -- one earned -- on four hits and one walk while striking out three over six innings of a 6-2 victory.

Paxton is scheduled to make his second big-league start Saturday at St. Louis.

  • Justin Verlander hit with 11th loss

Tigers starter Justin Verlander (12-11) turned in a decent outing but was not backed by enough run support as he suffered his 11th loss of the season Saturday night against Kansas City. The right-hander yielded four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out seven over seven innings of a 4-3 defeat.

Verlander has allowed four runs or more in three of his last four starts. He'll get another crack at the Royals Friday night at home. He is 5-6 with a 3.70 ERA in 15 starts at Comerica Park.
