  • Alex Cobb SP | DET

Giants' Alex Cobb: Bullpen session set for Thursday

Cobb (groin) will throw a bullpen session Thursday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The right-hander threw 30 pitches at about 70 percent intensity in a bullpen session Monday, but he's expected to ramp things up at Thursday's session. Cobb is unlikely to be activated from the 10-day injured list when first eligible Saturday, but if all goes well Thursday he may be able to return sometime next week.

  • Julio Urias SP | LAD

    Dodgers' Julio Urias: Limits Diamondbacks

Urias allowed one earned run on one hit and two walks while striking out four across six innings Wednesday against Arizona. He did not factor into the decision.

Urias allowed only one hit, though it was a solo home run to Nick Ahmed. That robbed him of the chance to earn a win, as he was engaged in a pitcher's duel with Zac Gallen. After a shaky opening start, Urias has allowed only two earned runs across his last 16 innings and three starts. The Dodgers' desire to limit his workload -- he has not thrown more than 75 pitches in any outing -- and 4.0 BB/9 are causes for concern, but his results remain strong.

  • Nationals' Stephen Strasburg: Tosses 37 pitches Wednesday

Strasburg (neck) threw a 37-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

Strasburg slightly increased his pitch count Wednesday after he threw 30 pitches Friday. The right-hander has been trying to go out of the windup, and manager Dave Martinez is hopeful that Strasburg will be able to resume facing hitters the next time he's scheduled to throw. A timetable for his return isn't yet clear, but it'd be a significant step in his recovery if he's able to throw against batters.

  • Quinn Priester SP | MIL

Pirates' Quinn Priester: Increases throwing distance

Priester (oblique) has increased his throwing distance to 120 feet, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports.

Priester was initially expected to miss approximately two weeks of game action after landing on the 7-day minor-league injured list April 8, but he hasn't yet been cleared to resume mound work. It's not yet clear when he'll be able to pitch off a mound, but he'll likely require some time to build up once that happens.

  • Wade Miley SP | CIN

Cubs' Wade Miley: Throws 46 pitches Wednesday

Miley (elbow) threw 46 pitches during his live batting practice session Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Miley threw a 50-pitch bullpen session Friday, and he tossed a similar number of pitches while facing live batters Wednesday. It's possible the southpaw begins a rehab assignment soon, but the Cubs will wait and see how he feels Thursday before determining the next steps in his recovery process.

  • Dustin May SP | MIL

Dodgers' Dustin May: Progressing in recovery

May (elbow) has completed eight bullpen sessions of 25-30 pitches each in April, and he could begin throwing live batting practice in about a month, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

May remains months away from a return, but he appears to be doing well in his rehab from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander will take another big step in his recovery by incorporating curveballs in his next bullpen session, per Plunkett, and he could throw to live hitters for the first time since the surgery by the end of next month. May figures to be a late-season boost to an already effective Dodgers pitching staff as long as he continues to progress without setbacks.

  • Ryan Feltner SP | COL

Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Promoted ahead of start

The Rockies recalled Feltner from Triple-A Albuquerque ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Phillies in Philadelphia.

Lefty reliever Lucas Gilbreath was sent to Triple-A to clear a spot on the 28-man active roster for Feltner, who previously made a pair of spot starts for the Rockies late in the 2021 season. The 25-year-old right-hander was unable to secure a spot in the Rockies' Opening Day rotation, but he didn't have to wait long to receive a call-up after a recent doubleheader created the need for Colorado to temporarily break in a sixth starter. Feltner should be sufficiently stretched out after covering at least five innings in each of his four Triple-A starts, but he'll likely be sent back to Albuquerque shortly after Wednesday's outing.

  • Luis Castillo SP | CHW

Reds' Luis Castillo: Needs two more rehab starts

Reds manager David Bell said Tuesday that Castillo (shoulder) will require two more rehab starts in the minors before returning from the 10-day injured list, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Castillo made his first rehab appearance Sunday with High-A Dayton, giving up an earned run on two hits and three walks while striking out four over 2.1 innings. After Castillo tossed 48 pitches in that outing, the Reds are targeting 60-to-65 pitches or four innings for him in his second rehab start, which will come Friday with Triple-A Louisville, according to Nightengale. Assuming he remains on a normal four days' rest schedule following his second and third rehab starts, Castillo would tentatively line up to make his season debut with the big club May 9 versus the Brewers in Cincinnati.

  • Mike Clevinger RP | PIT

Padres' Mike Clevinger: Completes third rehab start

Clevinger (knee) made the third start of his minor-league rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A El Paso, working 3.2 innings while giving up one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out five.

Clevinger built up to 67 pitches (45 strikes) Wednesday and continues to show excellent efficiency as he draws closer to making his 2022 debut for the Padres. Though Clevinger missed the entire 2021 season while recovering from his November 2020 Tommy John surgery, it's a sprained right knee that prevented him from breaking camp as a member of the Padres' Opening Day rotation. The Padres may want to see Clevinger reach the 80-pitch mark during his rehab assignment before activating him from the 10-day injured list, so he could be in store for one more start with El Paso.

  • Sixto Sanchez SP | MIA

Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Plays catch from 45 feet

Marlins manager Don Mattingly said Tuesday that Sanchez (shoulder) has resumed playing catch from 45 feet out, Byron Kerr of MLB.com reports.

The ability to play light catch marks a major step forward for Sanchez, who hadn't been cleared for any throwing after reporting to spring training in early March while he continued his recovery the shoulder surgery he underwent last July. Given the multiple arm-related setbacks he's endured over the past two seasons, Sanchez is likely to be brought along slowly in his throwing program, so he could be several weeks away from getting back on the mound for a bullpen session. Even if he avoids any further complications during his buildup program, Sanchez likely won't be fully ramped up and ready to handle a starter's workload until the middle of the summer.
