  • Tyler Anderson SP | LAA

Giants' Tyler Anderson: Start postponed by poor air quality

Anderson won't start Tuesday in Seattle as scheduled, as the game has been postponed due to air quality issues, Jared Diamond of The Wall Street Journal reports.

Parts of the West Coast have the world's worst air quality at the moment due to wildfires tearing through the region. The teams will travel down to San Francisco, where the situation is slightly better, and will hope to complete their two-game series Wednesday and Thursday. According to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, Anderson will receive an additional day of rest and start Thursday's contest.

  • Zack Wheeler SP | PHI

Phillies' Zack Wheeler: To play catch Tuesday

Wheeler (finger) will play catch Tuesday as the Phillies try to determine whether or not he'll be able to pitch this week, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Wheeler tore his fingernail while putting on his pants last week and is at risk of missing an extended period. He threw a bullpen session Monday and will throw again Tuesday, and if the nail holds up fine he could be cleared to start Thursday against the Mets.

  • Brewers' Drew Rasmussen: Comes through in key spot

Rasmussen threw two scoreless innings of relief in the Brewers' loss to the Cardinals in Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader.

The Brewers used their top relievers in the first game of Monday's twin bill, which gave Rasmussen the chance to pitch in a key spot in the nightcap. He got the job done, keeping the Cardinals off the scoreboard despite entering the game with runners on first and third and no outs. Rasmussen allowed just one runner to cross home plate over his last 8.1 innings, and on the heels of Tuesday's performance he could find himself working in higher-stress situations more often.

  • Braves' Touki Toussaint: Optioned to alternate site

Toussaint was optioned to Atlanta's alternate training site following Monday's game.

Toussaint allowed eight runs (five earned) while recording just eight outs in his start against the Orioles on Monday. He now owns an 8.88 ERA in 24.1 innings on the year and a 5.97 ERA in 95 career big-league innings. Jasseel De La Cruz was recalled in a corresponding move.

  • Zac Gallen SP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Dealing with discomfort

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Gallen was dealing with "a little bit of discomfort" with the fingernail of his pitching hand during Saturday's outing against the Mariners, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

Lovullo said the fingernail did not play a significant role in what turned out to be Gallen's worst start of the season. The right-hander allowed a career-high seven runs on seven hits, including two home runs, and five walks over five innings. Gallen is expected to take his next turn Friday on the road against Houston.

  • Johan Oviedo SP | BOS

Cardinals' Johan Oviedo: Getting closer to return

Oviedo (illness) threw a socially-distanced flat-ground bullpen session Sunday and could potentially start the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday against the Brewers, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Oviedo was placed on the list due to having come in contact with an infected individual, but he's repeatedly tested negative over a five-day period and has already been quarantined. With the right-hander seemingly healthy, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak noted Monday that Oviedo could be cleared to return and pitch Game 2 of Wednesday's twin bill if he has one more negative COVID test on Tuesday.

  • Corbin Burnes SP | ARI

Brewers' Corbin Burnes: Fans 10 in no-decision

Burnes allowed one run on five hits and three walks over 4.2 innings in the loss to St. Louis during Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader. He struck out 10 and did not factor in the decision.

Burnes wasn't very efficient, needing 101 pitches to get through just 4.2 innings, but he still managed double-digit punchouts for the third time in his last four outings. He was removed before allowing a run but was charged with one after Alex Claudio let an inherited runner score. The 25-year-old owns a stellar 74:22 K:BB and 1.98 ERA across 50 innings this season. Burnes will look to keep rolling against the Royals at home Saturday.

  • Max Fried SP | NYY

Braves' Max Fried: Remains on track for short IL stint

Fried (back) is expected to start Friday's game against the Mets, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

As expected, Fried's trip to the injured list will be a short one, barring a major setback. He was placed on the 10-day IL due to back spasms Tuesday and should return when first eligible.

  • Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw: Takes second loss

Kershaw (5-2) allowed three runs on five hits and struck out nine over 6.1 innings in Monday's loss to the Padres.

Kershaw and Dinelson Lamet dueled for the first six innings, but Kershaw faltered in the seventh. The 32-year-old southpaw has now allowed three or more runs in back-to-back starts. He has a 2.28 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 53:8 K:BB in 47.1 innings this season. Kershaw will try to get back in the win column Saturday in Colorado.

  • Kwang Hyun Kim SP | STL

Cardinals' Kwang Hyun Kim: Fires seven shutout innings

Kim allowed three hits and three walks over seven shutout innings in a loss against Milwaukee in the first game of Monday's doubleheader. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision.

Kim was brilliant Monday, mowing down Milwaukee's lineup with just 87 pitches in seven innings. The 32-year-old southpaw has been on a tear since moving into the Cardinals' rotation; in his last four starts, he's tossed 24 innings while allowing just one unearned run. Kim will carry a dominant 0.63 ERA into Pittsburgh on Saturday.
