  • Max Fried SP | NYY

Braves' Max Fried: Cruises to 17th win

Fried (17-6) picked up the win in Saturday's 8-1 victory over the Giants, giving up five hits over 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out two.

As expected, the southpaw saw a limited workload of 65 pitches as Atlanta prepares for the playoffs, but he was still efficient enough to qualify for the win, firing 51 of them for strikes. Fried is scheduled for one more outing in 2019, and he'll take a 4.11 ERA and 168:46 K:BB through 163 innings into a road start against the Mets on Sept. 28.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Can't find plate in loss

Cueto (1-1) took the loss Saturday as the Giants fell 8-1 to Atlanta, giving up four runs on two hits and five walks over four innings. He struck out five.

The veteran right-hander's recovery from Tommy John surgery finally hit a serious snag. Cueto tossed only 39 of 78 pitches for strikes, and a four-run second inning ruined his 0.00 ERA since his return. He'll take the mound one more time in 2019 in a home start against the Dodgers on Friday.

  • Zach Davies SP | WAS

Brewers' Zach Davies: Strong effort in no-decision

Davies didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 10-1 rout of the Pirates, giving up an unearned run on three hits over four innings. He struck out two.

The right-hander only tossed 57 pitches (34 strikes) before exiting the game with Milwaukee ahead 5-1, giving Davies no chance to pick up an easy win. He'll take the mound one more time in 2019, carrying a 3.61 ERA and 100:50 K:BB through 154.2 innings into a road start Friday against the Rockies.

  • Zack Wheeler SP | PHI

Mets' Zack Wheeler: Strikes out six in no-decision

Wheeler allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts across seven innings during a no-decision against the Reds on Saturday.

The 29-year-old only had two 1-2-3 innings, but he worked around 10 baserunners (counting the reached on error) to only yield two runs. Wheeler hasn't allowed more than two runs since Aug. 24, as he's posted a 1.41 ERA in his last five outings. Wheeler is 11-7 with a 3.99 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 185 strikeouts in 187.1 innings this season. He will make his last start of the year Thursday at home against the Marlins.

  • Reds' Anthony DeSclafani: Yields two runs in no-decision

DeSclafani allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts across six innings during a no-decision against the Mets on Saturday.

The right-hander struggled with tossing up homers early this season, but he's solved that problem lately and been pitching much better. He's allowed only three home runs over his last six outings, which has resulted in a 2.08 ERA during that stretch. Overall, DeSclafani is 9-9 with a 3.84 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 162 strikeouts in 161.2 innings this season. He lines up to make his last start of the year at the Pirates on Friday.

  • Dodgers' Walker Buehler: Falls to Rockies

Buehler (13-4) took the loss Saturday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over six-plus innings. He struck out five in the 4-2 loss to the Rockies.

Buehler allowed solo shots to Ryan McMahon and Josh Fuentes in the contest, as well as giving up a pair of runs in the third. Buehler was working on short rest after swapping spots with Hyun-Jin Ryu for the weekend. It was the first loss in six starts for Buehler, who owns a 3.25 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 177.1 innings this season. He'll likely get one more regular-season start, versus the Giants on Friday.

  • Kyle Freeland SP | COL

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Two scoreless innings in return

Freeland (groin) tossed two scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out one in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Saturday.

Freeland made the start after missing nearly a month with a groin injury. He gave way to Chi Chi Gonzalez, who would go on to pick up the win. Freeland has a 6.84 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 101.1 innings this season, taking a large step back from the 2.85 ERA he posted last year. The southpaw may have time to make one more start, in the final series of the year at home against the Brewers.

  • Nationals' Stephen Strasburg: Seven strong innings

Strasburg allowed three hits and three walks while striking out six across seven shutout innings Saturday against the Marlins. He did not factor into the decision.

Strasburg exited the game with a four-run lead after dominating the Marlins through seven frames. However, the bullpen blew his chance for a win, serving up four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Despite that, it was an impressive outing for Strasburg as he allowed just one-extra base hit and induced 10 groundouts. Strasburg has now allowed two or fewer earned runs in six of his last seven starts -- he gave up three earned runs in other contest -- lowering his ERA to 3.37 for the season. He's likely to draw his final start of the regular season Thursday against the Phillies.

  • Mike Soroka SP | ARI

Braves' Mike Soroka: Short outing likely

Soroka is likely to be limited to four or five innings and will have a pitch count in his next start Wednesday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Soroka has thrown nearly 180 innings, tripling the mark he posted in 2018. Now that the Braves have clinched the NL East it's not particularly surprising that the team will limit its promising 22-year-old starter to close the regular season.

  • Cardinals' Carlos Martinez: Notches 23rd save

Martinez pitched a scoreless ninth inning while walking one to get the save in a 9-8 victory over the Cubs on Saturday. He struck out two.

Martinez has now converted 12 straight save chances and has accumulated 23 saves on the campaign. The 28-year-old is 4-2 with a 3.38 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 50 strikeouts in 45.1 innings this season.
