Tony Gonsolin RP | KC
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Could pitch in relief in playoffs
Gonsolin is being considered for a postseason bullpen role, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
Gonsolin was originally scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Rays, but the Dodgers decided to bring him out of the bullpen instead in preparation for his possible postseason role. Gonsolin responded by allowing two runs on one hit in two innings and walking three batters while picking up a pair of strikeouts while being charged with a blown save. If the 25-year-old makes the postseason roster, he would most likely be used in a piggyback situation in a potential fourth game, as the Dodgers seem committed to forgoing a traditional starter should the NLDS stretch that far.

Tyler Mahle SP | ATL
Reds' Tyler Mahle: Quality start in no-decision
Mahle didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Cubs, giving up one run on one hit and two walks over six innings. He struck out three.
The right-hander threw 75 pitches (42 strikes) in one of his better recent efforts, but Mahle had no chance at picking up his third win of the year in a game that went to 10 innings. He'll carry a 4.93 ERA and 123:31 K:BB through 122.1 innings into what should be his final start of the season, at home against the Brewers on Sept. 26.

Adrian Houser SP | SF
Brewers' Adrian Houser: Tough loss against Padres
Houser (6-7) took the loss Wednesday as the Brewers fell 2-1 to the Padres. He allowed two runs on three hits over five innings while striking out five.
The right-hander made only one real mistake among his 70 pitches (46 strikes), but rookie Seth Mejias-Brean launched it into the seats for a two-run shot in the third inning. Houser will carry a 3.83 ERA and 109:36 K:BB through 103.1 innings into his next start Tuesday in Cincinnati.

Julio Teheran SP | BAL
Braves' Julio Teheran: Stumbling down stretch
Teheran (10-10) took the loss Wednesday as Atlanta fell 4-1 to the Phillies, giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks over five-plus innings while striking out six.
Keeping the ball in the park was again an issue for Teheran, as he served up homers to Bryce Harper in the fourth inning and Cesar Hernandez to lead off the sixth. The right-hander has been taken deep five times in his last two starts -- more than in his prior 10 starts combined -- and lost them both. He'll carry a 3.55 ERA and 161:82 K:BB through 172.1 innings into his next outing Tuesday in Kansas City.

Zach Eflin SP | BAL
Phillies' Zach Eflin: Solid effort in ninth win
Eflin (9-12) picked up the win in Wednesday's 4-1 victory over Atlanta, allowing one unearned run on five hits and two walks while striking out four.
The right-hander only tossed 58 strikes among his 99 pitches and managed to generate only three swinging strikes, but he kept Atlanta hitters off balance and didn't give up an extra-base hit. Eflin will carry a 4.00 ERA and 121:42 K:BB through 150.2 innings into his next start Monday, on the road against the Nationals.

Hyun-Jin Ryu SP | TOR
Dodgers' Hyun-Jin Ryu: Increasing bullpen work
Ryu threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
Per Plunkett, the bullpen session was Ryu's third in the "past few weeks" -- a notable observation since Ryu has traditionally opted not to throw bullpens between starts. The change of routine is likely an effort to get the southpaw back on track after he surrendered 21 earned runs over 19 innings during a recent four-game stretch. Ryu was much better his last time out, holding the Mets scoreless over seven innings in a no-decision Saturday.

Noah Syndergaard SP | CLE
Mets' Noah Syndergaard: Yields four runs in no-decision
Syndergaard allowed four runs on 10 hits with two walks and six strikeouts across 5.2 innings during a no-decision against the Rockies on Wednesday.
The good news is Syndergaard somewhat limited the damage considering he allowed 12 baserunners, but this was also the third straight start where he yielded four runs. After working hard to overcome a terrible outing on Aug. 28, Syndergaard's ERA is back well over 4.00, and he's barely averaging a strikeout per inning. Overall, he is 10-8 with a 4.22 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 186 strikeouts in 185.2 innings this season. Syndergaard will make his next start Tuesday at home against the Marlins.

Carlos Martinez SP | SF
Cardinals' Carlos Martinez: Posts 21st save
Martinez induced four straight groundouts in a four-out save during a 5-1 victory against the Nationals on Wednesday.
The right-hander entered with two runners aboard and two outs in the eighth, but he quickly induced a groundout to end the frame. He did the same with three ground balls in the ninth. Martinez hasn't struck out any batters in his last two appearances, but owners have hardly anything to complain about, as he's converted 10 straight saves and carries a 10.2-inning scoreless streak. Overall, Martinez is 4-2 with 21 saves, three blown opportunities, a 2.91 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and 47 strikeouts in 43.1 innings this season.

Adam Wainwright SP | STL
Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Continues incredible hot streak
Wainwright (13-9) allowed one unearned run on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts across seven innings to earn a victory against the Nationals on Wednesday.
His counterpart, Max Scherzer, had almost the exact opposite start, striking out 11 but yielding five runs. Although he did have seven strikeouts in his last outing, Wainwright contributes very little in that area, but he's been outstanding at stranding runners anyway, and he hasn't yielded a homer in five straight starts. During that stretch, he owns a 4-0 record with a jaw-dropping 0.88 ERA. Overall, Wainwright, who will pitch again Monday at the Diamondbacks, has a 3.83 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 144 strikeouts in 162.1 innings this season.

Sandy Alcantara SP | MIA
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Charged with loss
Alcantara (5-14) was charged with the loss against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, surrendering five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a pair of walks while striking out three across 5.2 innings.
The right-hander allowed the Diamondbacks to get to him early, serving up a home run to Abraham Alamonte in the first inning. He also allowed a homer to Christian Walker in the fifth. The rougher outing hit a bit harder after Alcantara had allowed just one run over his last two starts (16 innings), including a complete game against the Royals. The 24-year-old will take a 4.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 140:80 K:BB into a Tuesday showdown against the Mets.
