  • Dustin May SP | MIL

Dodgers' Dustin May: To pitch in relief

May will pitch out of the bullpen Sunday against the Diamondbacks, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.

May was slated to pitch as either a starter or reliever Sunday, and the Dodgers have since revealed that the right-hander will pitch in relief. He owns a 4.07 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with a 17:4 K:BB over 24.1 innings in the majors this year.

  • MacKenzie Gore SP | TEX

Padres' MacKenzie Gore: Assigned to AZL

Gore was transferred from Double-A Amarillo to the AZL Padres on Wednesday.

The move is purely procedural, as Gore has reached his workload limit for the season and won't pitch in the Texas League playoffs. By moving the southpaw to rookie ball, Amarillo opens up a roster spot for another player. Gore finishes an exceptional season with a 9-2 record, 1.69 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 135:28 K:BB in 101 innings between two levels.

  • Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Not starting this weekend

Wainwright won't start any of this weekend's games against the Reds, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Wainwright last pitched Monday, so he could start Saturday or Sunday on regular rest, but Michael Wacha and Daniel Ponce de Leon will work in Saturday's doubleheader while Miles Mikolas closes out the series. There's been no indication of any injury concerns, but Wainwright struggled in his last two starts, allowing seven runs on 14 hits and seven walks over 8.2 innings. The Cardinals have yet to announce their rotation plans beyond the weekend, but if all he needs is some extra rest, the 38-year-old figures to take the mound Monday or Tuesday against San Francisco.

  • Brewers' Brandon Woodruff: Starts mound work

Woodruff (oblique) threw 15 pitches off a mound Friday morning and reported no discomfort, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

It's the first time Woodruff has been on a mound since he landed on the injured list with a left oblique strain over a month ago, so this is a significant progression in his rehab. The 26-year-old is hoping to rejoin the Brewers in the latter half of September, but he's still at least a couple weeks away as he begins to ramp up his throwing program.

  • Julio Urias SP | LAD

Dodgers' Julio Urias: Throws 43 pitches in High-A outing

Urias pitched two innings for High-A Rancho Cucamonga on Thursday, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits and no walks while striking out two.

Urias pitched in a game for the first time since receiving a 20-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy on Aug. 17. He threw 43 pitches and gave up a double, two singles and a hit batsman. Urias' next appearance is likely to be with the big club after his suspension is lifted Monday.

  • Cole Hamels SP | SD

Cubs' Cole Hamels: Returns from paternity list

Hamels was activated off the paternity list Friday, Bruce Miles of the Chicago Daily Herald reports.

Hamels left the team Tuesday to join his wife for the birth of their fifth child, but he rejoins the roster in advance of Saturday's scheduled start. The veteran lefty has struggled in August with a 7.29 ERA and 1.90 WHIP, and he'll look to turn around his fortunes at home against the Brewers.

  • Jacob deGrom SP | TEX

Mets' Jacob deGrom: Sunk by long balls in loss

DeGrom (8-8) took the loss against the Cubs on Thursday, pitching seven innings and giving up four runs on five hits and no walks while striking out seven.

DeGrom was victimized by a pair of Victor Caratini homers that accounted for all four runs scored against him, the second of which was a three-run shot in the seventh inning that broke open a 1-1 tie. The disappointing outing snapped a string of 17 consecutive starts in which deGrom gave up less than four runs and marked his first loss since June 28. The 31-year-old will try to get back in the win column when he travels to Washington to take on the Nationals on Tuesday in his next scheduled start.

  • Chris Paddack RP | TEX

Padres' Chris Paddack: Dominant in win over Giants

Paddack (8-7) picked up the win against the Giants on Thursday, giving up just one earned run on five hits over seven strong innings, striking out eight with no walks in the Padres' 5-3 victory.

The talented rookie had been struggling lately, giving up 19 earned runs over his last four starts coming into the contest, but he bounced back with a dominant effort against the Giants and picked up his first win of August. Even with the recent struggles, the 23-year-old is posting solid numbers this season, as he's now sporting a 3.69 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 129:27 K:BB across 124.1 innings.

  • Hyun-Jin Ryu SP | TOR

Dodgers' Hyun-Jin Ryu: Takes third straight loss

Ryu (12-5) took the loss against the Diamondbacks on Thursday, giving up seven earned runs on 10 hits over 4.2 innings, striking out four and walking one as the Dodgers fell 11-5.

That's now back-to-back starts in which the left-hander has been shelled for seven earned before making it out of the fifth inning, and he's lost three straight decisions overall, giving up 18 earned runs over that stretch. He's in a rut at the moment, but Ryu's numbers still look excellent thanks to his torrid start to the season, as he's sporting a 2.35 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 137:20 K:BB across 157.1 innings.

  • Merrill Kelly SP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly: Labors in no-decision

Kelly threw four innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Thursday, giving up three earned runs on three hits over four innings, striking out four and walking four as the Diamondbacks eventually prevailed 11-5.

Kelly's spot in the rotation has come into question due to his recent struggles, and while he didn't get shelled in this contest, he still labored in issuing four free passes and finding himself unable to make it to the five-inning threshold to qualify for the decision. He figures to remain in the rotation for now, but he hasn't been consistent enough to put himself on the fantasy radar this season, as he's sporting a pedestrian 4.91 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across 150.1 innings.
