  • Kenta Maeda SP | NYY

Dodgers' Kenta Maeda: Strikes out seven Rockies

Maeda gave up three earned runs on six hits over 5.1 innings in a no-decision in the Dodgers' 5-4 loss to the Rockies on Friday. He struck out seven and walked three.

Maeda emerged with a solid line in a treacherous matchup against the Rockies at Coors Field, missing out on a quality start by two-thirds of an inning. He was in line for a win when he departed the contest in the sixth inning, but the Rockies got to reliever Zac Rosscup for two runs, forcing Maeda to settle for the no-decision. The 30-year-old has managed to post a useful fantasy campaign despite the occasional hiccup, with a 3.80 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 130 strikeouts in 109 innings. It's possible he heads to the bullpen in the near future with Alex Wood (hamstring) nearing a return, although that move wouldn't necessarily sink Maeda's fantasy value as he could emerge as a top replacement option for Kenley Jansen (irregular heartbeat).

  • Jon Gray SP | TEX

Rockies' Jon Gray: Strikes out four in no-decision

Gray didn't factor into the decision against the Dodgers on Friday, giving up four earned runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings, striking out four and walking one in the Rockies' 5-4 victory.

Gray had been dominant over his previous four starts prior to this one, and although he wasn't able to keep up that suffocating form in this contest, he managed a respectable final line. He hasn't posted eye-popping ratios this season, with a 4.81 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 127.1 innings, but he's been much better in that department lately, as Friday's contest marked just the second time in his last seven outings that he's yielded more than two earned runs. He's also been a reliable source of strikeouts, with a 148:37 K:BB. Gray is slated to take the mound next on the road against Atlanta on Thursday.

  • Cardinals' Carlos Martinez: Plays 'aggressive catch' in recent days

Martinez (shoulder), who spent time with the team during the early part of the week in Miami, eventually returned to St. Louis and played "aggressive catch" according to interim manager Mike Shildt, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander has been on the shelf since July 31 with a right shoulder strain, the latest malady to befall him in what's turned into an injury-filled season. Martinez was projected to miss between three or four starts when he went on the disabled list, and nothing indicates that estimate has changed. Martinez is likely to progress to a bullpen session as his next step, but how quickly that transpires is firmly up in the air.

  • Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Positive BP session in Florida

Wainwright's (elbow) live batting practice session in Jupiter, Fla. on Friday went well, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

Wainwright's recovery has finally started to gain some steam after the All-Star break, with Friday's BP serving as the latest milestone. Assuming he has no setbacks over the weekend, the veteran right-hander is expected to either face hitters again or head to High-A Palm Beach on a minor-league rehab assignment early next week.

  • Austin Gomber SP | TEX

Cardinals' Austin Gomber: Nabs second win

Gomber (2-0) got the win against the Royals on Friday, scattering four hits over five scoreless innings while striking out three and walking one in the Cardinals' 7-0 victory.

Gomber was given the start with the Cardinals opting to put new acquisition Tyson Ross in the bullpen for the time being, and he responded with a bounceback effort after a poor start his last time out. Gomber's 3.45 ERA through 31.1 innings is respectable, but with Carlos Martinez working his way back from a shoulder injury and Ross now in the fold, his hold on a rotation spot is far from certain. However, this strong showing may make the Cardinals inclined to give Gomber another go, especially if Martinez needs to miss another turn in the rotation.

  • Kyle Hendricks SP | LAA

Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Grabs quality start in no-decision

Hendricks picked up a quality start in Friday's win over the Nationals but did not factor into the decision. He lasted six innings and allowed a pair of runs on eight hits while striking out five.

Hendricks wasn't dominant but limited the damage, scattering the Nationals' hits and only allowing one extra-base knock. The outing lowered his season ERA to 4.02. He'll next take the hill Wednesday in a key divisional matchup against the Brewers.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Moves to 60-day disabled list

Cueto (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Friday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

The move is purely a procedural one, as Cueto is done for the year and potentially all of next year after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He was removed from the 40-man roster in order to make room for Casey Kelly, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.

  • Kenta Maeda SP | NYY

Dodgers' Kenta Maeda: Shift to bullpen possible

Maeda may transition to a role in the bullpen following Friday's start against Colorado, Andy McCullough of The Los Angeles Times reports.

Kenley Jansen is expected to miss around a month of action while dealing with an irregular heartbeat, so Maeda could receive some save opportunities alongside Scott Alexander if this does indeed happen. Over 21 appearances (19 starts) with the Dodgers this year, Maeda has posted a 3.73 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with a 10.7 K/9.

  • Jacob Nix SP | SD

Padres' Jacob Nix: Officially recalled from minors

Nix was called up from Triple-A El Paso prior to his start against Philadelphia on Friday.

As expected, Nix was officially promoted Friday as he gears up for his first start at the big-league level. In a corresponding move, Phil Hughes was designated for assignment.

  • Braves' Touki Toussaint: Could make MLB debut Monday

Toussaint appears to be a likely candidate to start against the Marlins during Monday's doubleheader, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Toussaint last appeared against Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, so he will be well rested for Monday's outing should he be called upon. The 22-year-old has impressed across five starts with Gwinnett since being called up to the Triple-A level in early July, logging a 2.01 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 32 strikeouts in 31.1 innings.
