  • Johnny Cueto: Elects free agency

    Cueto elected free agency Monday.

Cueto was removed from the Angels' 40-man roster Friday after posting a 7.15 ERA in two starts, and he's now free to sign on with another club. The 38-year-old holds a 6.22 ERA over 63.2 frames since the beginning of the 2023 campaign.

  • Angels' Johnny Cueto: Removed from 40-man roster

The Angels designated Cueto for assignment Friday.

Cueto stumbled to a 7.15 ERA in a pair of starts for the Halos, striking out just six batters across 11.1 innings while taking two losses. He'll yield his spot on the 26-man and 40-man rosters as Samuel Aldegheri and Caden Dana join the big-league club.

  • Angels' Johnny Cueto: Allows three homers in loss

Cueto (0-2) took the loss against the Tigers on Tuesday, allowing six runs on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts over five innings.

Cueto was locked in a 2-2 game through four innings but then surrendered three home runs and was pulled without recording an out in the sixth. In two starts with the Angels, the veteran has allowed nine earned runs across 11.1 innings while posting a 6:3 K:BB. He tentatively lines up to face the Mariners at home Sunday.

  • Angels' Johnny Cueto: Sticking around in rotation

Cueto is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Tigers at Comerica Park.

The Angels called Cueto up from Triple-A Salt Lake this past Wednesday to make his club debut as well as his first appearance in the majors of 2024. The 38-year-old righty was far from overpowering (one strikeout, three swinging strikes on 84 pitches) and took a loss to the Rangers, but he worked into the seventh inning and allowed three earned runs to come away with a quality start. So long as he can continue to eat innings effectively enough, Cueto should maintain a hold on a rotation spot, but his lack of strikeout upside limits his fantasy value.

  • Angels' Johnny Cueto: Promoted ahead of start

The Angels selected Cueto's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday.

Cueto owns a 3.09 ERA and 1.39 WHIP across 23.1 innings with Salt Lake since signing a minor-league deal with the Angels in July. However, he accumulated a 6.02 ERA over 52.1 frames during his time with the Marlins last year and will be making his season debut Wednesday against a high-scoring Royals offense. Hans Crouse was optioned to Triple-A in order to clear space on the active roster.
