Dodgers' Corey Seager: Could play defense soon

Seager (illness) could start playing defense in minor-league games by the end of the week, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

Seager has had a bit of a rocky spring. He entered camp still recovering from Tommy John surgery and hip surgery and had been restricted to the designated hitter spot in minor-league games early in March. That process has been delayed for a week while the shortstop battles an illness. If he's able to take the field by Thursday, he'd still have a full two weeks to get ready for Opening Day, though the illness has robbed him of any room for setbacks.

Dodgers' Corey Seager: Still out Monday

Seager (illness) remains out of the lineup Monday against the Giants.

The Dodgers have an off day Tuesday, so a couple extra days should allow Seager to get healthy for Wednesday's game. Daniel Castro is starting at shortstop in his place.

  • Orlando Arcia SS | MIN

Brewers' Orlando Arcia: Slugs three-run homer

Arcia went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Sunday's game against the Cubs.

Arcia launched his first home run of the spring in the fourth inning, bringing the Brewers within one run after Chicago jumped out to a 5-0 lead. He's seen plenty of time in the leadoff role so far in camp, but he slotted into the No. 6 spot in the order Sunday, which is closer to where he'll sit during the regular season.

  • Tommy Edman 2B | LAD

Cardinals' Tommy Edman: Impresses with glove, bat

Edman went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in a 9-3 Grapefruit League loss to the Astros on Saturday.

The promising non-roster invitee snacked his first round tripper of spring off Colin McHugh in the second inning with Harrison Bader aboard to extend the Cardinals' lead to 3-0 at the time. Glenn Sattell of MLB.com reports that Edman also flashed his defensive prowess in the top half of the frame with a nifty backhand of a Tyler White grounder and subsequent strong throw to first to retire him. Edman then doubled A.J. Reed off second base in the fifth after snagging a blooper in shallow center, making it a stellar all-around performance. The 23-year-old is projected to kick off the 2019 regular season at Triple-A Memphis, where he already slashed an impressive .318/.382/.394 across 76 plate appearances at the end of last season.

Dodgers' Corey Seager: Not playing Saturday

Seager (illness) is out of the lineup for Saturday's Cactus League game against the Mariners, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.

Ken Gurnick of MLB.com relayed a day earlier that Seager could make his spring debut Saturday, but the Dodgers evidently felt the shortstop could benefit from at least another day of rest. Seager's recent bout with the illness remains a lesser concern for the Dodgers than his surgically repaired elbow, which limited him to just 26 games in 2018. The Dodgers remain optimistic that Seager will be able to pick up enough at-bats and infield work this spring to guarantee his availability for Opening Day.

  • Braves' Johan Camargo: To get work in outfield

Camargo will get a game in the outfield next week, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

There were suggestions that Camargo would fill a "Marwin Gonzalez-type role" earlier in the offseason, and it appears that the Braves are moving forward with that plan. Camargo should be the primary backup at each infield position and could even spend more time in the outfield than Adam Duvall, should he prove to be able to track flyballs well. The 25-year-old has a grand total of one inning in the outfield under his belt as a major leaguer, but the Braves will want to get his bat in the lineup on a regular basis, as he owns a .281/.343/.455 slash line in 216 games. If he's starting more often than not, he's certainly deep-league relevant, and he'll have the potential for more whenever another Atlanta hitter gets injured.

Dodgers' Corey Seager: Could return Saturday

Seager (illness) may be cleared to play Saturday against Seattle, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

Seager was back in camp Friday after falling ill, and there's a possibility he'll get cleared in time for Saturday's spring game. He's still on his way back from elbow and hip surgeries, so the Dodgers would like to get him back into the lineup sooner rather than later.

Dodgers' Corey Seager: Returns to camp after illness

Seager is back in camp Friday after missing a pair of days due to illness, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.

The illness interrupted a camp which already wasn't a particularly smooth one, as Seager is still working his way back from elbow and hip surgeries. He had seen some game action as a designated hitter on the minor-league side prior to the illness but has yet to be cleared to take the field.

  • Orlando Arcia SS | MIN

Brewers' Orlando Arcia: Playing frequently this spring

Arcia went 1-for-3 while hitting leadoff in Thursday's spring game.

Arcia has hit leadoff three times in his six appearances this spring, but manager Craig Counsell is likely just letting him get his feet wet in that spot, as Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich will almost certainly occupy the top two spots in the batting order when the regular season gets underway. While that will push Arcia to the bottom third of the batting order, he figures to play regularly at shortstop out of the gate.

  • Daniel Castro SS | COL

Dodgers' Daniel Castro: Knocks in two

Castro went 2-for-2 with two RBI in Thursday's game against the Angels.

Castro has found success early in the spring and is now 3-for-8 with three RBI and two runs scored. Although he's a long shot to break camp with the big-league team, he could see time in the majors if the Dodgers are bitten by the injury bug at any point during the regular season.
