The Knicks waived Shamet (shoulder) on Saturday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports. Shamet was already expected to miss the start of the regular season after dislocating his right shoulder. The Knicks are expected to try to bring Shamet back once he recovers from his injury.

The Knicks announced Friday that Shamet dislocated his right shoulder and will be re-evaluated at a later date. Shamet exited Tuesday's preseason game against the Hornets after injuring his shoulder while reaching for the ball. The 27-year-old does not have a timetable for his return to game action, though he will likely miss significant time. Shamet is currently signed to a training camp deal, and the Knicks have until January to guarantee his contract.

Shamet exited Tuesday's preseason game versus the Hornets with 3:38 remaining in the third quarter and headed to the locker room due to an apparent shoulder injury, Ian Begley of SportsNet New York reports. Shamet seems unlikely to re-enter the game Tuesday as the Knicks could play it cautiously during the preseason. Shamet recorded eight points (3-10 FG, 2-7 3Pt) and two rebounds before exiting.

Shamet will start in Tuesday's preseason game against the Hornets, James L. Edwards III of The Athletic reports. Shamet will enter the starting five with the Knicks deciding to rest their usual starters Tuesday. The 27-year-old is expected to add depth in the backcourt this season, though he will likely struggle to find significant playing time competing for minutes with Miles McBride and Cameron Payne behind Jalen Brunson (rest) and Mikal Bridges (rest).

Shamet is increasingly likely to earn a roster spot in the Knicks' opening night rotation, head coach Tom Thibodeau implied to Stefan Bondy of The New York Post. "I don't make the final decision on that, but I'm basing it on what [Shamet's] done on the floor. He's really done well," Thibodeau said. Shamet is playing on a non-guaranteed deal, but based on Thibodeau's words, he's been a standout performer in camp thus far. Given that the Knicks will hand one of their two open roster spots to a veteran, it seems that spot is Shamet's to lose. Shamet averaged 7.1 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 15.8 minutes across 46 regular-season appearances, including five starts, for the Wizards in 2023-24 before missing the final 18 games with a left calf strain.
